As a member of the Engineering Student Success Team (eSST), the Assistant Director for Engineering Admissions is responsible for recruiting prospective students, developing, and supporting outreach activities, and assisting with activities to enhance the transition and retention of new first-year and transfer students. The position is responsible for advising undergraduate engineering students, individually and in groups, at student orientation and throughout the academic year.

This position is not eligible for permanent residency sponsorship. 

 

Specific Job Duties and Tasks 

  • Recruit and inform prospective students, and their guests, through in-person visits, online meetings, email, telephone, and other communication methods. 
  • Provide presentations and meetings for prospective students and their guests to promote enrollment in the College of Engineering 
  • Represent the University of Iowa College of Engineering to targeted constituencies. Speak to groups and individual students; communicate with staff, faculty, and administrators at high schools and community colleges to promote the College of Engineering and recruit new Engineering students. 
  • Assist in developing and implementing on-campus and off-campus recruitment activities. 
  • Serve as primary academic advisor for a select population of first-year students.  
  • Advise students regarding departmental, collegiate, and University policies and procedures; programs of study; and the development of appropriate academic plans. 
  • Maintain extensive knowledge of relevant academic programs and resources. 
  • Meet with students, individually and in groups, during summer/winter orientation programs for first-year students. 
  • Gather data and prepare reports and analyses of varying complexity. 
  • Prepare profiles, college guides, surveys, and other reports. Provide information, data, and guidance to internal and external partners regarding admission and enrollment.  
  • Provide support, training, and functional supervision for Engineering Student Ambassadors.

Education Requirement

  • Bachelor’s degree is required.  

 

Required Qualifications

  • A minimum of 6 months of experience – including undergraduate experience – in student recruitment, admissions, academic advising, academic support and retention, career advising, residence life, student life, or K-12 education. 
  • Excellent communication and listening skills: strong professional writing, public speaking, interpersonal and public relations skills.  
  • Demonstrated ability to be self-directed, organized, and proactive in completing work assignments. 
  • Ability to occasionally work evenings and weekends during the academic year. 
  • Demonstrated success in fostering a welcoming and respectful workplace environment. 
  • A valid driver’s license and continued compliance with the standards of the University Driving Policy is required. 

 

Desired Qualifications

  • 1 year or more of experience in student recruitment and admissions. 
  • Program development/management experience for K-12 audiences.
