Assist and work with dentists, dental students and dental hygienists.  Interacting with patients, assisting with the management of patients, training dental students in operation of the clinic, developing radiographs and chairside dental assisting.  For a full job description, please send an e-mail to COD-Requisitions@iowa.uiowa.edu.

  • Clean, organizes, prepares dental operatory area for patient treatment, using prescribed infection control procedures.  Keeps patient delivery and waiting areas picked up and neat.  Cleans, disinfects and completes closing procedures for dental operatories at end of the clinic day.
  • Organizes patient delivery pre-set trays with appropriate instruments, sets out prescribed materials and armamentarium for scheduled procedures.  Manipulates dental materials following prescribed directions.
  • Sorts, prepares and disinfects instruments following the directives of the Faculty General Practice Clinic and the Patient Admissions Clinic.
  • Orders, organizes and stocks supplies in cabinets in designated areas according to criteria established for the Faculty General Practice Clinic and the Patient Admissions Clinic.
  • Greets, seats, places napkin and headrest, prepares patient for treatment; dismisses patient.  Updates pertinent patient information.  Takes and records blood pressure readings.  Records in the electronic patient record the examination findings verbalized by operator.
  • Exposes, processes and mounts radiographs of patients.
  • Loads cartridge and needle for practitioner's administration of local anesthetic.  Picks up, passes and receives appropriate instruments for procedure being done.  Correctly utilizes intra-oral suction and air/water.
  • Anticipates, recognizes and provides emotional support and reassurance to patients.  Communicates verbally and nonverbally with staff, faculty, students and patients in a positive and constructive way. 
  • Exhibits an understanding of the philosophy of the program consistent with appropriate performance.
  • Takes alginate impressions, pours and trims study casts, fabricates custom impression and bleaching trays, makes temporary moulds.
  • Assist in other areas utilizing a full range of dental assisting skills and lab duties.
  • Demonstrates professional behavior in interacting with others, recognizes and demonstrates appropriate ethical standards, maintains confidentiality; adheres to recommended standards of dress, personal appearance and hygiene.
  • Enters completed charges, appointment requests, and otherwise interactswithin the electronic patient health record (axiUm).
  • May be working with graduate students in the graduate clinic.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

50% - 80% Dental Assistant II – GC25 (Merit)

College of Dentistry – Clinic Administration

Salary:  $17,862.84 - $28,580.54

Schedule:  TBD - Monday – Friday, 8:00am – 5:00pm – May require occasional overtime.

 

An advanced starting salary may be possible based on exceptional qualifications.

                               

MINIMUM ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Successful completion of an ADAA dental assistance program or two years of chairside assistant experience assisting in four-handed method of dentistry.
  2. Must have a current certificate of registration to practice as a dental assistant issued by the Iowa Board of Dental Examiners.
  3. Must possess current Iowa certificate of proficiency in dental radiography.

Applicants must have the following, by time of appointment:

  1. Successful completion of ADAA-accredited dental assistant program or 24 full-time months chairside dental assisting experience in four-handed dental practice.
  2. Must have a current certificate of registration to practice as a dental assistant issued by the Iowa Board of Dental Examiners.
  3. Must possess current Iowa certificate of proficiency in dental radiography.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience working with a general dentist.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others.
  • Experience working with electronic health record.
  • Experience working with graduate students.
