The University of Iowa Distance and Online Education is seeking a dedicated Academic Advisor and Support Services Specialist (100% appointment) to help students achieve their academic goals.

This position provides comprehensive academic advising and program support to students admitted to University College programs, including the Bachelor of Applied Studies (BAS) and Bachelor of Liberal Studies (BLS) online degree programs. These programs serve various student populations, with a high volume of transfer and non-traditional students.

They will also have the opportunity to:

·       Support the needs of transfer students by evaluating transfer credit, understanding how to identify transfer course equivalencies, and providing a seamless transition to the University of Iowa.

·       Collaborate with other offices to improve services for online and UC students to increase academic success; expand online academic supports, conduct academic support workshops.

·       Assess student understanding of graduation requirements and degree audits.

About the Department: University College serves an important role at the University of Iowa and is an academic home for numerous courses or programs that span across multiple units.  The College offers two bachelor's degrees, the BAS and BLS.  These programs allow students who have already received an associate's degree, or who have prior college credit, to earn a four-year degree.  We also offer undergraduate certificate programs in: clinical and translational science, leadership studies, nonprofit management, and sustainability.  In addition, several K-12 programs are also administered through academics units that are associated with University College.  University College is committed to the success of all University of Iowa students. This commitment is demonstrated in the programs and services that we offer through Distance and Online Education, Orientation Services, On Iowa!, New Student Services, Academic Support and Retention, and the Academic Resource Center.


Required Qualifications:

·       Bachelor’s degree, preferably in an education-related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

·       1 year experience in academic advising or other similar experience working in a higher-education setting.

·       Occasional local travel may be required for student recruitment and departmental outreach, typically within standard working hours.

Competencies Required:

·       Demonstrates a working proficiency level in the following competencies:

o         Ability to work in a team-based environment that supports a variety of individuals and groups in a constructive and respectful manner.

o        Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and projects simultaneously, demonstrating strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

o        Ability to process information with high levels of accuracy and attention to detail.

o        Ability to work developmentally with students; ability to promote student learning, development, and success by applying  advising approaches to a variety of individual student situations.

Desirable Qualifications:

·       Master’s degree, preferably in an education-related field.

·       3 years’ experience working in an academic advising role

·       Direct experience and familiarity with FERPA and university regulations

Work Modality:

This position is eligible for hybrid work (1 remote day/week) within Iowa and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of your employment. Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually, and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location.

Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $48,500 - $54,000, with the top of the range reserved for exceptionally qualified applicants. This position includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package.
