The University of Iowa Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is seeking an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner in our Maternal-Fetal Medicine Division. The ARNP will be responsible for daily oversight of high-risk pregnant patients with gestational and pregestational diabetes.  This is accomplished through a variety of mechanisms including EPIC, My Chart, telemedicine, referrals and direct patient care and contact.  

The ARNP functions as a member of a team of health care providers including fellow physicians, resident physicians, staff physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and nurses to provide services to the population of patients seen in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinics.  

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology provides consultation, comprehensive treatment planning and a broad range of services for patients with normal and high-risk pregnancies and for gynecology, including oncology and reproductive endocrinology. Our comprehensive medial, surgical, and nursing services span the full spectrum of all obstetric and gynecologic patients at University of Health Care.  In addition to patient care, the department is noted for its strong educational programs for sonography students, medical students, residents, fellows, and practicing physicians.  Basic and clinical research in reproductive medicine is an important departmental activity.   

Key Areas of Responsibility and Specific Job Tasks

  • Performs health assessments for pregnant women.
  • Performs physical exams.
  • Diabetes management technology including glucometers, continuous glucose monitors, insulin pumps and  online portals for glucose monitoring systems.
  • Documents findings in medical record.  Entering medical note in record. 
  • Performs, orders and interprets routine laboratory tests; performs follow-up notification to patients about results.
  • Makes appropriate referral to medical staff of healthcare provider depending on patient needs. 
  • Establishes and evaluates plans of patient care and outcome on a continuing basis.
  • Accurately and appropriately complete documentation of patient care in EMR and other records for compliance, billing and other regulatory standards. Lead and participate in quality, safety and process improvement initiatives
  • Provides health education to patients and families; educate PAs/ ARNPs/ NNPs and/or other members of the health care team. Participate in ongoing research and professional development. Serve on committees to enhance patient care and operations.
  • Possesses understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors.
  • Has extensive knowledge and understanding of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.

Required Qualifications

  • A Master's degree is required. A Master's degree in Nursing is preferred.  If Master's degree is in a related field, a Baccalaureate degree in nursing is required.
  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa.
  • Current certification in specialty area and licensure as ARNP in state of Iowa.
  • Reasonable clinical experience (1-3 years) in diabetes management of patients.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to serve as a liaison and to collaborate with physicians, staff, patients, and other customers.

Desired Qualifications

  • Clinical nursing experience with obstetrics.
  • Formal training or certification in diabetes.
