This four-year commitment will offer the necessary tools to grow your career in the skilled trades. Following the initial four-month training program, evaluations will continue every six months until candidates reach the required minimum years to be eligible for a full time Area Mechanic position with potential growth opportunity beyond.
This unique opportunity includes but is not limited to: eligibility for a full University of Iowa benefits package, including retirement contributions, paid time off (vacation, holidays, sick time), technical training is on-the-job working side-by-side with other skilled trades technicians. Tools and uniforms are provided!
This four-year program will allow employees to develop the necessary skills in the following areas:
- Basic maintenance of mechanical equipment
- Maintaining inventory of required parts
- Developing communication skills
- Inspecting buildings and equipment for deficiencies
- HVAC maintenance & repair
About Facilities Management:
Facilities Management (FM) is a service unit of approximately 500 employees who work behind the scenes, 24 hours a day, serving the University of Iowa as stewards for our downtown Iowa City campus and Oakdale campus in Coralville. FM staff coordinate campus master planning, manage design and construction, and maintain and clean the buildings and grounds.
Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm – overtime as required
Required Qualifications:
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Special Qualifications:
- Valid driver’s license and ability to meet and maintain UI Fleet Safety Standards.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Knowledge of UI policies, procedures and campus.
- Mechanical aptitude and previous mechanical training or experience.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Ability to use equipment and tools effectively to perform essential job functions of the job with or without accommodations.
- Ability to move for extended periods of time.
- Ability to prioritize and organize multiple tasks.
- Basic knowledge of safety measures.
- Practiced critical thinking skills.
- Demonstrated basic computer skills.
- Works well supervised or unsupervised.
- Ability to work in a team setting.
- Good customer interaction skills.
