The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is seeking an Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Education and Curriculum. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Undergraduate Program (CLAS UP) is the central hub for academic advising, student retention, and services related to academic policies and curriculum management in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS). The CLAS UP team oversees the General Education CLAS Core and all college majors, minors, and certificates.

The Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Education and Curriculum will report to the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education and will lead efforts related to enrollment management and curriculum in the college. This role will work closely with all CLAS academic programs and departments on enrollment management and course planning, will lead course planning for winter and summer sessions, and will review and make recommendations on instructional resource requests that come to the college. Additionally, this role will be the primary contact in CLAS for the faculty members who serve as Directors of Undergraduate Studies and for the Provost’s Office related to curricular changes in CLAS and any associated Iowa Board of Regents paperwork. The Assistant Dean will supervise two positions in CLAS UP (Associate Director for Curriculum and Instruction and the Academic Assessment Coordinator) and will be part of the CLAS UP leadership team along with the three CLAS UP Directors.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Predict and plan for instructional needs for incoming and returning students in collaboration with the Associate Dean, CLAS Advising, Registrar’s office, Office of Admissions, and Academic Advising Center and academic departments in CLAS.
  • Coordinate communication and assess critical needs for winter and summer sessions with academic advising and campus partners.
  • Prepare and coordinate curricular change requests to the Provost’s Office and BOR, including name changes and other requests.
  • Collaborate on curricular projects with the Center for Teaching and the Office of Teaching, Learning, and Technology.
  • In collaboration with the Associate Dean and the Associate Director for curriculum, establish and manage deadlines for academic programs to propose for changes to majors, minors and certificates.
  • Collaborate with Associate Dean and Associate Director for Curriculum and Instruction on curricular changes (majors, minors and certificates).
  • Assess and make recommendations on visitor and adjunct instructor requests as well as the graduate Teaching Assistant (TA) allocation requests.
  • Collaborate with Associate Dean, Associate Director for Curriculum and Instruction, and CLAS UP Directors on instructional policies and best practices.
  • Represent the college in such campus-wide activities such as committees, external committees, and Board of Regent initiatives.
  • Take on special projects for the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education.

Education Required

  • A Master's degree in a core liberal arts and sciences area, an M.Ed., an MSW, MFA, or an MBA, or a combination of education and experience.

 

Required Qualifications

  • Academic program management experience or progression in the higher education field (typically 10+ years) is required.
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to effectively transmit, receive and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through appropriate communication methods and behaviors at an expert/leader proficiency level is required.
  • Expert/Leader proficiency in computer software applications including word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, databases, and web content management is required.
  • Demonstrated expert/leader proficiency in the ability to work with variety of individuals and groups in a constructive manner while appreciating the unique contribution of various individuals.

 

Desired Qualifications

  • Expert/Leader knowledge of key issues and emerging trends in undergraduate education programming, including learning networks and culture shifts in higher education is highly desired.
  • A PhD in a liberal arts and sciences or education discipline is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated leadership and problem-solving skills using institutional data sources is highly desired.
  • Proven ability to effectively collaborate with institutional leaders to achieve strategic goals through initiatives and committee work.
  • Minimum 1 year teaching experience in a liberal arts and sciences discipline.
  • Demonstrated expert/leader ability to collaborate with partners both within and outside the working environment is desired.
  • Extensive familiarity with higher education curriculum, academic policies and practices, and enrollment management.
