Assistant Nurse Manager - 3Center - Downtown Campus

Position Summary:
This position will assist with the nursing oversight of patient care provided within the medical inpatient unit at University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center Downtown campus. This position involves direct patient care and coordinates efforts of planning, organizing, directing, evaluating, and improving health care operations and clinical education programs.
Position Responsibilities:
Human Resource Management
- Hire or assist in hiring nursing unit staff.
- Develop and manage the performance of staff as directed.
- May complete performance appraisals on assigned staff.
- Ensure staff members are compliant with competencies, policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Understand and apply appropriately the provisions in the union contracts.
Financial Management
- Actively help manage operating expenses for the unit or clinic.
- Review with nurse leaders financial reports and provide insights into budget variances.
- Recommend budget ideas, resources, and cost containment strategies
Operations, Standards of Care, Regulatory Compliance, Quality and Patient Satisfaction
- Collaborate with nurse leaders to identify Quality Management and patient satisfaction opportunities for improvement.
- Implement and maintain standards and quality plans.
- Engage staff in meeting plan goals.
Patient Care/Services Delivery
- Supervise care delivery and assist in coordinating patient care teams on the unit.
- Serve as a resource for patient care problems.
- May provide some patient care.
Planning & Goal Management
- Collaborate with nursing leaders to develop and implement unit/clinic or division strategic plans.
Communication & Collaboration
- Communicate with physicians, staff, and other healthcare providers on a regular basis to promote effective and efficient operations within the unit/clinic.
- Communicate with patients, families, and staff to address and resolve issues.
Education Programs
- Provide evaluative feedback to staff members and health care students.
- Work with clinical instructors/educators to facilitate clinical education experiences.
Research Administration
- Support unit evidence-based practice research initiatives.
Percent of Time: 100%
Schedule: Days 0700-1530 Monday through Friday, with unit on call as needed

Education / Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing.
- Current license to practice nursing in Iowa or ability to obtain an Iowa license upon hire.
- 1-3 years’ experience in leadership/management roles including clinical experience in acute care is required.
- Current experience leading/managing transitions in care.
- Experience with unit operations including human resources, financial management, and compliance with regulatory environment with various federal and state agencies and the Joint Commission
- Must be proficient in computer software applications.
- Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.
- Certification in a role or specialty through a nationally recognized professional nursing certification body. If not currently certified, must seek certification in a role or specialty as soon as eligible to sit for exam.
- Demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Desired Qualifications:
Previous experience working in a community-based hospital.
Experience working in a union environment.
