The College of Education Grants and Research Services Center is seeking an Assistant Research Scientist to enhance the research mission of the College of Education by supporting faculty and other researchers identify and implement appropriate quantitative and qualitative methodological designs and analyses. 


-Annual evaluation. Three-year term appointment. May be renewable.


-Location : Lindquist Center, Iowa City, IA 


The College of Education is advertising for an Associate Research Scientist (req# 24004670), along with this position. You may apply for one or both positions, however, we are seeking to fill only one of these positions at either the Associate Research Scientist or Assistant Research Scientist level.

The College of Education offers more than 80 undergraduate and graduate degree programs, including licensure, endorsement, and certificate programs, many of which are regularly ranked among the best in the nation.  Students study with our world-renowned faculty who are the leaders, scholars, and innovators in their fields.  Our college is comprised of four departments: Educational Policy and Leadership Studies, Psychological and Quantitative Foundations, Rehabilitation and Counselor Education, and Teaching and Learning 


•    Assist in the management of research projects with PIs from multiple disciplinary backgrounds.
•    Provide methodological (quantitative and qualitative) support to investigators.
•    Develop plans for data entry, management, and analysis that comply with university and federal regulations.
•    Prepare and review data for quality, validity, and accuracy; recommend additional coding procedures or modifications as needed.
•    Assist in the development and monitoring of IRB human subjects research protocols.
•    Assist in the preparation of research papers and manuscripts for publication and presentation at conferences.
•    Assist in writing grant proposals, annual project reports, and other ancillary project documents (e.g., data management plans, human subjects plans).
•    Participate in public outreach activities to support broader impacts of funded projects.
•    Participate in university, state, or national meetings within the discipline.
•    May serve as key personnel (methodologist) on extramural grant proposals

Education Required

  • Position requires a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline (e.g., education; behavioral, social, or economic sciences; public health) or related field focused on issues of education research (e.g., Educational Measurement, Applied Statistics, Informatics)

Required Qualifications
•    Experience working as a methodological expert on education research projects including research design development.  Minimum experience is 1 – 3 years.
•    A record of research productivity including evidence of referred publications and presentations.
•    Experience with a range of quantitative research methods and software. (e.g., R, SPSS, SAS, Stata, Mplus) and qualitative research methods and software (e.g., NVivo, Dedoose).
•    Demonstrated ability to collaborate with a variety of individuals and groups in a constructive and civil manner while appreciating the unique contribution of individuals from varied cultures, race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, sexual orientation, and gender identity.
•    Effective communication techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors.
•    Technical or professional writing experience. A writing sample must be included as part of the application process and may be of the following: co-authored publication, technical report, or portions of a grant submission.

Desired Qualifications
•    Familiarity with emerging issues in education research.
•    Prior experience with grant writing or proposal development in educational research.
•    What Works Clearing house certification 
•    STEM Education or School Mental Health research experience
