Position Summary:

Assistant Research Scientist will conduct highly technical and specialized scientific research at the interface of cancer biology, radiation physics, and redox biochemistry.  Research projects involve the diverse advanced techniques to interrogate the effects of ionizing radiation on iron metabolism and assess its role in tumor cell motility. This position will independently secure funding; design and perform research experiments and theoretical investigations; analyze data and disseminate research findings with primary emphasis to collaborations on investigations with other faculty researchers.  Academic knowledge of cancer biology and radiation physics or associated field with a doctoral degree or equivalent professional degree is required as well as outstanding achievement and publications in the field of cancer and radiation biology

Free Radical and Biology Program Summary:

The Free Radical and Radiation Biology Program(FRRBP) is a unique, storied PhD-granting program within the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. We provide graduate students the opportunity to study cancer biology and other major human diseases through a unique curriculum developed to advance redox biology through translational biomedical research and vice versa. This curriculum was developed through foundational studies of free radical and radiation biology within a research setting as close to clinical care as possible. We are the only PhD graduate program within a clinical department in the USA, providing students a more balanced education for biomedical research and the chance to directly implement your research for cancer therapy and therapy development.  We are affiliated with researchers in cancer, heart disease, arthritis, wound healing, fibrosis, diabetes, cystic fibrosis and several clinical trials for redox related compounds.  We have two $10M program grants affiliated with our groups and are a national leader in cancer research.

Our faculty and staff deliver within the Department of Radiation Oncology exceptional clinical care at the University of Iowa Health Care and across five community-based sites in Iowa, Bettendorf, Burlington, Clinton, Iowa City, and Ottumwa. We are proud of our department's exceptional scores in patient satisfaction. Patients have access to a range of advanced radiation treatment options, including intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT), brachytherapy (high-dose-rate, interstitial, and eye plaque), Gamma Knife stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) with frame-based and frameless delivery capability, stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), total body irradiation (TBI), total skin electron beam therapy (TSEBT), and Accelerated Partial Breast Irradiation (APBI) for the breast. We have an active pediatric radiotherapy service with the capability to treat patients under anesthesia. Additionally, our department boasts the only magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-guided linear accelerator in Iowa, enhancing the precision of radiation treatments.

Required Qualifications:

  • This position requires a PhD in radiation physics, radiation biology, radiation chemistry, cancer biology, biochemistry. 
  • Minimum of 1-3 years of relevant postdoctoral experience in radiation biology or related field. 
  • Strong working knowledge of in vitro and in vivo experimental procedures.
  • Strong working knowledge of radiation delivery.
  • Strong working knowledge of flow cytometry analysis including FlowJo.
  • Strong working knowledge of western blotting and equipment.
  • Strong working knowledge of spectrophotometer-based assays.
  • Proficiency in cell culture techniques in isolating and culturing normal and cancer cell lines.
  • Strong working knowledge of in vivo assays and cancer-specific endpoints.
  • Strong organization skills required.
  • Effective interpersonal skills required as well as written and oral communication and presentation skills.
  • Proficient computer skills including Graph pad Prism, Adobe illustrator, Photoshop, ImageJ as well as working knowledge of email, word processing, and Excel spreadsheets.
  • Proficiency in analyzing data for confocal microscopy.

Desired Qualifications:

  • 5 years relevant experience in radiation and/or cancer biology or related field.
  • Strong working knowledge of radiation delivery techniques.
  • Experience with in vitro and in vivo analysis of iron.
  • Experience with in vitro and in vivo analysis of redox biological enzymes (e.g., nadph oxidases).
  • Animal handling experience.
  • Knowledge of University of Iowa Policies and Procedures.
