Assoc Research Scientist/Engin - Internal Medicine
BASIC FUNCTION
Oversee and coordinate day-to-day activities for multiple research projects involving prospective data, electronic health records, and large administrative data. May be responsible for managing analysts utilizing data from the University of Iowa Health Care and the Iowa City Veteran Affairs Medical Center. The successful candidate will be passionate about data, possess strong analytical skills, and be adept at working collaboratively in a results-oriented environment.
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
Experiments, Simulations, Modeling or Theoretical Investigations:
Initiate research design and methodology.
Originate design, research conduct, and coordination.
Apply statistical and machine learning techniques to develop predictive models and algorithms.
Develop hypotheses to be tested and select methodology.
Work independently on complex research tasks with oversight by Faculty or Principal Investigator.
Data/Research Analysis and Evaluation:
Perform advanced data analysis techniques.
Develop new applications of existing data analysis techniques.
Dissemination of Research Results:
May prepare and submit reports and manuscripts for publication.
Demonstrate strong publication record.
May contribute to public data archives or other resources; e.g., software, models, or on-line tools to support scientific research.
Research Proposals/Grants:
Serve as statistician/biostatistician, contribute to research proposals and funding agency reports.
May write research proposal to obtain independent funding as PI.
Service:
Seek leadership opportunities appropriate to the scientific discipline, which may include serving on proposal review panels.
May serve on departmental or University committees.
May organize outreach efforts in alliance with funding sources.
Human Resources/Supervision:
Mentor graduate students and junior analysts.
May provide functional and/ or administrative supervision for staff.
Provide subject matter expertise, direction, assignments, feedback, coaching and counseling to assure outcomes are achieved.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
A Doctoral degree.
3 years of related experience.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong data analysis skills using tools like SAS, R, Python, or equivalent.
Experience working with and extracting data from large, health care databases (VA, Medicare, Claims, etc.).
Strong data visualization skills using tools like ggplot2, Tableau, Power BI, or equivalent.
Experience in trial design and/or casual inference methodology.
Demonstrated knowledge of effective strategies for working with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience with machine learning and predictive modeling is a plus.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team.
Ability to provide functional and/or administrative supervision of staff.
Excellent communication and presentation skills.
Attention to detail and a commitment to delivering high-quality work.
