The University of Iowa Design & Construction team is seeking an Associate Director to join their team. The position provides direct leadership for a team of UI construction project managers in managing on-site construction activities. Responsible for the delivery of effective project management services. This position will focus on the construction phase of projects and work with other D&C unit leaders to ensure effective project management throughout the life of the project, resulting in the successful delivery of projects to the campus. Projects have a high level of complexity and can be high profile and have a greater impact on the operations of the institution. May be multi-phased with multiple contracts; project team may include staff from several disciplines and/or departments as well as Specialty Consultants. Project durations can be as long as 3-5 years.
This position is eligible for hybrid work within Iowa and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of your employment. Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually, and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location.
Duties to Include:
- Oversee the planning, organization, monitoring, and control of projects, ensuring efficient utilization of technical and administrative resources, to achieve project objectives.
- Provide direction, assignments, feedback, coaching and counseling to assure outcomes are achieved.
- Work with unit ADs to coordinate a smooth and seamless transition of project activities and responsibilities from design project managers to construction project managers.
- Oversee the review and verification of contractor’s submittals to ensure consistency with the project commissioning plan.
- Provide advice on development/interpretation of contract documents. Review design and/or construction for industry best practices. Review bids received with unit ADs and recommend contract awards to administration.
- Provide leadership and supervision to the Construction Management team including collaborating with Human Resources on recruitment process for any positions within area of responsibility.
- Responsible for the oversight and successful management of multiple project budgets within the Build UI software system.
Location: University Services Building
Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm

Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Professional experience (typically 7-9 years or more) with increasing responsibilities in institutional design and/or construction of major projects.
- Successful candidates will have experience in project management, leading project managers and leadership experience.
- Must demonstrate leadership ability and senior level planning skills with a good working knowledge of project management and sound building practices.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient in computer software applications.
- Familiarity with construction site safety guidelines.
- Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.
Superior interpersonal skills with professional job-related experience fostering or promoting a welcoming and respectful work/academic
environment where people of all backgrounds and perspectives feel welcomed and appreciated; or demonstrated the ability to do so.
Desired Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management or related or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Possession of a Project Management Professional (PMP)® certification or similar credential, indicating a strong foundation in project management methodologies and standards.
- 7-9 years’ experience in construction management or construction supervision on a university campus.
- Supervision of professionals, preferably on a university campus.
- Extensive knowledge of facilities management and total-cost-of ownership principles.
- Expert/Leader level experience with project management software, commissioning processes, laboratory or MEPT capital improvement projects and/or state building inspection procedures.
- Extensive experience preparing and monitoring departmental budget enterprise financial model.
- Expert/Leader level of knowledge with health care and research on a university campus.
- Demonstrated skills and abilities to negotiate optimal and acceptable outcomes among competing opinions and interest.
- Demonstrated ability to provide clarity and direction to complex and ambiguous problems and challenges.
- Experience in a client-focused, team-oriented environment.
