The Stead Family Department of Pediatrics, Division of Medical Genetics & Genomics & Iowa Newborn Screening Program is seeking an Associate Genetic Counselor to provide genetic counseling, specialized care and testing coordination services to patients and families identified through the newborn screening program within the scope of the genetic counselor license.  This position will also develop and provide education to newborn screening stakeholders; including parents, health care professionals, and the general public. Duties to include:
 
  • Provides supportive counseling and disorder specific education to the parents/guardians of newborns who have a positive newborn screening result.
  • Provides genetic counseling to patients and families during the initial newborn screening period as well as during the confirmatory testing process or after a diagnosis is confirmed.
  • Performs or assists with care coordination and/or referrals to specialty care or sweat testing
  • Coordinates confirmatory testing with specialty services and explains the testing, reviews potential results, and discusses implications with the parent(s)/guardian(s).
  • Communicates test results and provides follow-up counseling and care coordination for patients/families.
  • Documents a clear, concise summary of counseling and care coordination provided in the newborn screening program database and/or EPIC as appropriate
  • Provides follow-up counseling for patients/families, e.g. by telephone, letter, or return visit.
  • Acts as a liaison and advocate for patients/families with 3rd party payors, billing office and others.
  • Develops and presents education on newborn screening, genetic testing, as well as disorder specific education to newborn screening stakeholders. The stakeholders include but are not limited to: parent(s)/guardian(s), health care professionals in hospitals and clinics throughout the state, the general public, legislators, students in health care and public health programs throughout the state, the media, and health care learners who rotate in the Division of Medical Genetics and Genomics.
  • Develops and implements genetic counseling protocols for new disorders added to the newborn screening panel; assists with reviews and revisions of existing newborn screening follow up protocols.
  • Participates in the design and implementation of research projects and assists with analysis and summarization of results
  • Participates in the design and implementation of quality improvement and educational activities for the Iowa Newborn Program
  • Maintains communication and working relationships with other health care providers, educational systems.
  • Responds to requests for information on newborn screening and genetic topics.
  • Participates in newborn screening programmatic meetings and/or committees as requested
  • Participates in divisional nurse/counselor programs and activities.
  • Participates in presentations and preparation of manuscripts/posters.
  • Participates in new and on-going projects of the Iowa Newborn Screening Program and the Division of Medical Genetics and Genomics
  • Represents and promotes the Iowa Newborn Screening Program and the Division of Medical Genetics and Genomics
  • Attends educational meetings, in-services, seminars and workshops to maintain and advance personal knowledge base.
  • Attends patient care, genetic conferences, and journal club.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge base and compliance with genetic counseling practices and standards as set by the NSGC and ABGC.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge base regarding newborn screening, genetics and genomics.

Division of Medical Genetics-Iowa Newborn Screening Program

 

The purpose of screening for metabolic and congenital disorders in the newborn period is to enable the early identification of, and intervention for, at-risk individual in order to prevent of lessen adverse health consequences such as intellectual and physical disability, serious illness, and death, with the overall objective of improving the quality of life for Iowans. The Iowa Department of Public Health works with State Hygienic Lab at The University of Iowa, the Stead Family Children’s Hospital of Iowa, and health care providers around the state to collect, test and follow-up for newborn screening.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Human Genetics or Genetic Counseling.
  • Genetic Counseling clinical rotations or internship experience; or 6 months to 1 year of experience in the field of genetic counseling is required.
  • Board certification or eligibility in genetic counseling from the American Board of Genetic Counseling is required.
  • Current licensure or eligible to be licensed as a Genetic Counselor in state of Iowa is required.
  • Proficient in computer software applications (Office Suite)
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to travel; some overnight stays required
 

Desirable Qualifications

  • Valid Driver’s License with the ability to meet and maintain The University of Iowa Fleet Safety Program driving standard.
  • Ability to travel; some overnight stays required
  • Demonstrated experience with developing educational materials
  • Demonstrated experience with teaching health related topics to the general public and to health care professionals
  • Demonstrated experience participating in quality improvement activities
  • Demonstrated time management and ability to prioritize projects/tasks
