The Moye-Rowley Laboratory is hiring an Assistant Research Scientist to carry out independent research projects focused on understanding drug resistance in fungal pathogens.  The ideal candidate will have proven experience investigating the molecular biology of mechanisms of drug resistance in organisms including Candida species and Aspergillus fumigatus.  The successful applicant will perform and help direct basic research aimed at understanding the mechanisms and regulation of resistance to antifungal drugs at the molecular level.

Duties to Include:

  • Experiments, Simulations, Modeling or Theoretical Investigations
    • Perform experiments, simulations, or theoretical investigations.
    • Collect data and evaluate relevance of data.
    • Work independently on basic research tasks with oversight by Faculty or Principal Investigator (PI).
    • Contribute to documentation of equipment and procedures.
  • Data/Research Analysis and Evaluation
    • Analyze data for relevance and data integrity.
    • Perform basic data analysis techniques.
    • Compare results of scientific investigations to previously published work.
  • Dissemination of Research Results
    • Prepare manuscripts for contributing author for publication.
    • Present results in departmental seminars and at professional meetings.
  • Research Proposals/Grants

o    Contribute to new or continuing research grant proposals to obtain funding for research activities.

o    May serve as co-PI on grants or proposals.

o    Contribute to progress reports required by funding agencies.

Supervise adherence to safety and compliance guidelines when necessary.

  • Service

o    Provide service to the scientific community, University and General Public.

o    Review submitted manuscripts and research proposals.

o    Consult and collaborate with the research community.

o     Participate in public outreach activities as required by funding sources.

o    May participate in national and international meetings within the discipline.

·         Human Resources/Supervision

o    Mentor graduate students.

o    May provide functional and/or administrative supervision for staff.

o    Provide direction, assignments, feedback, coaching and counseling to assure outcomes are achieved.

Type of Position: Specified Term. Appointment is for one year. Appointment may be extended based on performance and extension of funding.

Required Qualifications:

  • Academic knowledge of a discipline generally associated with a Doctoral degree or an equivalent professional degree, i.e., Ph.D., M.D., D.D.S, or D.V.M.
  • Three to five years of postdoctoral research related to biochemistry, molecular biology, molecular physiology and signal transduction.
  • Experience in protein purification, antibody generation, fluorescence microscopy, quantitative reverse transcription-PCR measurement of gene expression, as well as demonstrated expertise with standard molecular biological techniques such as cloning and PCR.
  • A background and experience documented by publication in studying antifungal drug resistance in at least two candida species including Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Candida albicans and Candida glabrata using genetic approaches.
  • Experience analyzing DNA binding measurements using techniques such as DNase I protection and electrophoretic mobility shift assay is also required.
  •  Experience analyzing mixed RNA samples from mammalian tissue infected with Candida glabrata clinical isolates and downstream analysis of these RNA samples using chromatographic enrichment of fungal RNA.
  • Demonstrated ability to generate reporter gene-containing strains that can be utilized in high throughput screening approaches.
  • A demonstrated ability to plan and execute a research study through some progressively responsible independent research work including a strong publication record.
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills are required.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • More than five years postdoctoral research related to biochemistry, molecular biology, molecular physiology and signal transduction.
  • Experience in modern analyses of transcription factor function including affinity purification of epitope-tagged proteins by column chromatography.
  • Experience in the use and construction of affinity purification moiety-tagged proteins as biochemical tools for both protein purification and ChIP reagents.
  • Well-versed in fungal genetics including gene disruption.
