The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation is seeking an Athletics Counselor to provide psychological services to assist student-athletes in attaining mental health and well-being. These services may include individual psychological evaluation and treatment, individual mental health counseling, case management, coordination of clinical referrals for care, crisis intervention and management, group counseling, and educational and outreach programming. All aspects of student-athlete identity, including but not limited to race, ethnicity, sex, gender identity, and sexual orientation, should be attended to and respected when providing mental health care. Duties to include:
  • Manage and provide specialized counseling and sport psychology services specifically for the UI Department of Athletics student-athlete population.
  • Prepare psycho-social histories, participate in clinical staff diagnostic and treatment staffing, interpret student-athletes’ psycho-social functioning and needs, and recommend and plan social treatment methods to meet these needs.
  • Provide direct services to include casework, social group work and therapy as assessed and recommended.
  • Provide indirect services through responsibility for and participating in program development, teaching and research.
  • Perform case management, write case reports covering on-going social services for inclusion in clinical records, maintain statistical records of social service activity.
  • Participate in multi-disciplinary team(s) within the athletic department in the management of student-athletes with significant mental health issues, disordered eating, etc.; assist with case management and coordination of mental health care for clinical referrals to outside resources for mental health and AOD services for student-athletes; provide referrals to students as needed.
  • Plan for and provide consultations to individual athletic trainers, academic coordinators, coaches, and administrators regarding mental health crisis, student-athletes of concern, challenging situations, general mental health issues and strategies for implementing performance psychology techniques.
  • Contribute to the formation of the department, hospital or clinic policies affecting patient and client care, training programs and departmental and professional growth.
  • Promote coordination of care and assure quality in services and program delivery.
  • Establish and disseminate referral, scheduling and documentation procedures to provide clinical services. Coordinate referral sources.
  • Participate in related research projects; responsible for administrative tasks and functions
  • Participate in the development, strengthening and delivery of needed health and social services.

  • Manages resources and petitions for change in a way that minimizes gender bias and maximizes compliance with federal and state laws regarding gender equity.  Acts as an advocate for any student-athlete, employee, or program that experiences unjustified inequity.

Budgeted salary: $55,000-65,000 commensurate with experience

Education Requirements
  • Master’s degree or higher from an accredited institution in clinical psychology, counseling, social work, or counseling-related field.
Required Qualifications
  • Licensed or license-eligible in the State of Iowa as a Licensed Clinical Provider {Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW) or Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW)}.
  • 2+ years of clinical experience, required.
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively, respectfully and appropriately with diverse populations in the Department, University and the community.
  • Excellent written and electronic communication.
  • Capable of handling multiple tasks in a high-stress environment.
  • Able to accurately interpret and adhere to NCAA and BIG Conference rules, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, University of Iowa and the Department of Athletics policies, and Iowa licensure-related statutes.
  • Knowledge and understanding of working with diverse and multicultural populations.
Desirable Qualifications
  • 2 years or more of clinical experience in sport, higher education, or other related setting.
  • Advanced training in sport psychology.
  • Knowledge and understanding of unique aspects of student-athlete population.
  • Experience, knowledge and understanding of eating disorders/disordered eating-assessment and treatment.
  • Experience, knowledge, and ability to treat trauma and trauma-related issues.
