The Stead Family Department of Pediatrics is seeking to hire a Biostatistician to play a key role in our Iowa Newborn Screening programs. This position will apply epidemiological/biostatistical methods to identify and develop data collection tools and data elements for the one of the more successful public health programs, the Iowa Newborn Screening Program (INSP), Implement and monitor Long-Term Follow-Up (LTFU) Program along with LTFU Team; analyze quantitative and qualitative data using biostatistics and informatics; and interpret and report results. Help to utilize the data to inform and improve the quality of the program overall, particularly laboratory and follow-up processes for population screening. Assist with other data needs including existing laboratory and Follow-Up data sets of the Iowa Newborn Screening Program. This is a specified term position. 

Position Responsibilities: 

  • Develop standard operating procedures (SOP’s) and data dictionaries; revise as needed.
  • Select, develop, use, and maintain a data collection tools/database for the LTFU Program.
  • Identify data elements for the LTFU program, including general and demographic data elements as well as disorder-specific data elements. This could include working closely with INSP staff and MD consultants to determine data elements.
  • Collect data and enter data into REDCap.
  • Select communication and education strategies for different audiences, particularly to INSP staff and other internal and external stakeholders. Present at various national and international professional meetings.
  • Collaborate with staff from our Quad State Collaborative and potentially staff from other NBS programs across the country on LTFU related activities.
  • Participate in various continuous quality improvement (CQI) and LTFU activities as directed by supervisor.
  • Enter and/or review NewSTEPs Quality Indicators into NewSTEPs repository; reconcile cases/data entered the NewSTEPs repository. Apply epidemiological/biostatistical methodologies to utilize data in the NewSTEPs repository to improve program processes.
  • Attend meetings related to LTFU, CQI and NBS data; travel may be required.
  • Participate in educational outreach efforts as assigned; travel may be required.
  • Perform other projects or tasks as assigned.
  • Seek opportunities to enhance one's own professional knowledge, skills, and abilities as they relate to one's current position and/or to prepare for potential future roles and overall career development.

About the Division of Medical Genetics and Genomics

The Division of Medical Genetics and Genomics is committed to excellence in providing comprehensive services for children, adults and prenatal patients in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of genetic conditions. The Division's multidisciplinary team is comprised of board-certified medical geneticists, a molecular genetic pathologist, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, genetic counselors, nurses, and dietitians.  Our clinics include: General Genetics Clinics, Metabolic Genetics Clinics, Connective Tissue Disorder Clinics, Neurofibromatosis Clinics and Outreach Genetics Clinics. Genetic diseases and disorders affect families as well as individuals. The medical team provides the information, support and follow-up needed to make informed decisions.  Our medical genetics team collaborates with state and federal agencies, educators, researchers, support groups and others to provide the latest information and treatment options for Iowans and their families.

Education Requirements:

  • Master’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and related experience. 

Experience Requirements:

  • Some (6 months+) previous work in epidemiology/biostatistics
  • Ability to select and analyze quantitative and qualitative data using biostatistics and informatics.
  • Computer-based programming and software such as SAS or R.
  • Ability to interpret results of data analysis.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Perform effectively on interprofessional teams.
  • Ability to travel.

Highly Desired Qualifications:

  • A master’s degree in public health with a focus area in epidemiology and/or biostatistics.
