Business Librarian
The Marvin A. Pomerantz Business Library, a branch of the University of Iowa Libraries, seeks a collaborative and service-driven professional to join our team as a Business Librarian. Located in the Pappajohn Business Building, the Business Library team is an active partner within the dynamic Tippie College of Business community. We deliver responsive, user-centered services in a high-traffic environment, connecting students, faculty, and staff with the information and tools they need to succeed.
Reporting to the Director of the Marvin A. Pomerantz Business Library, the Business Librarian will design and deliver forward-looking services that advance research, teaching, and learning as a trusted partner and collaborator. They will help the Tippie community engage with data, knowledge, and ideas by building on existing strong, collaborative relationships across the college, enhancing the visibility and impact of library services. As a key member of a team of four, they will co-create instruction, reference, and engagement opportunities that empower the Tippie community and contribute to the University Libraries’ mission of supporting academic excellence.
Specific duties and responsibilities include:
Instruction, Consultation, and Research Services
Collaborate with the business library team to deliver library services and resources that support the academic programs, departments, and centers of the Tippie College of Business.
Serve as an active subject liaison for business and economics, inclusive of instruction, research consultation, and outreach.
Provide business reference and research services to the Tippie College of Business and the UI community, including scheduled and unscheduled consultations, email, chat and phone.
Provide instruction both online and in person, in settings ranging from large lectures to small group sessions and collaborate with instructors to integrate business information sources and research skills into academic settings.
Support the classroom/academic curriculum by creating asynchronous materials such as instructional videos, research guides, and assignments.
Develop and assist with outreach and collaborative initiatives with units in the Tippie College of Business, campus constituents and relevant non-UI affiliated groups.
Select, Acquire, Organize, Preserve, and Provide Information Resources and Services
- Participate as a member of a team that plans, develops, and evaluates services and collections supporting teaching and research.
- Create and maintain research guides, tutorials, and promotional materials that enable the discovery of library collections.
Support day-to-day operations in the business library, including staffing the information desk and library.
Leadership/Staff and Resource Management/Financial ResponsibilityDevelop and maintain effective and productive relationships with Libraries staff, Tippie College of Business faculty and staff, campus units, professional colleagues, vendors, and other appropriate partners.
Assist in strategic planning at the unit or department level; collaborate to implement strategic vision and goals.
Continuous Learning & Skills Development
Engage with professional literature and attend events such as webinars, workshops, and conferences.
Seek out new learning opportunities based on the needs and direction of the business library and departments.
Professional Contributions
- Participate in and contribute to relevant library and University-wide activities and committees.
- Contribute to the profession through professional organization membership and service.
Qualifications:
Required Education:
ALA-accredited master’s degree in library/information science,
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum of two years of professional experience working in an academic or research library or equivalent.
- Experience providing research, instruction, and outreach services in a library setting.
- Demonstrated instruction, public speaking, and presentation skills with an engaging communication style.
- Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities in a collaborative environment while fostering a welcoming and respectful atmosphere.
- Demonstrated interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills with a commitment to customer service and ability to establish and maintain positive and productive working relationships.
Demonstrated interest in professional development that will enhance the candidate’s value to the Libraries, the University, and the profession.
Desired Qualifications:
- Professional experience or academic coursework in business librarianship, or a strong demonstrated interest in the field.
- Demonstrated skill in using business information resources and knowledge of emerging trends in business librarianship.
- Experience using online learning tools, such as LibGuides, tutorial creation programs, and course management software.
- Demonstrated understanding of the mission of a research university and the mission and functions of a large research library.

The hiring salary range for this Specialist Librarian position is $55,000 - $74,000.
Successful candidates will be required to self-disclose any conviction history and will be subject to a criminal background check and credential/education verification. Up to 5 professional references will be requested at a later step in the recruitment process.

This position is eligible for on-campus and/or hybrid remote work within Iowa, with the majority of work time being on campus, and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of your employment. Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually, and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location.
