The University of Iowa Parking and Transportation is seeking a Training Supervisor position that will perform duties in the hiring and training of CAMBUS drivers. This includes onboarding new employees and instructing them in classroom and behind-the-wheel (BTW) driving skills for required CDL licensing for transit buses and in ongoing driving and safety skills. The transit trainer also provides support to the Agency Safety Plan. This position serves as the primary functional supervisor of Training and Safety student staff (student trainers and supervisors) and of all drivers while they are in the training process.

 

This position is performed fully on campus.

 

Duties to Include:

  • Conduct interviews of prospective new hires and extend job offers 
  • Coordinate hiring process for drivers and onboard new employees 
  • Develops, coordinates, schedules, and provides training programs and initiatives for new drivers 
  • Evaluates trainee performance and recommends modified or additional training 
  • Evaluates and updates training and safety programs and related activities 
  • Provide classroom, behind-the-wheel, and CDL training to new driver trainees 
  • Coordinates retraining and refresher training of existing employees 
  • Assists in random, reasonable-cause, and post-accident testing for drugs
  • and alcohol in compliance with federal regulations 
  • Assists in accident and safety event investigations, and evaluates and recommends remedial training and/or disciplinary action when applicable 
  • Provides functional supervision to student employees, assists in performance evaluations, and recommends follow-up coaching and disciplinary actions 
  • Submits accident reports and related information to UI Risk Management 
  • Coordinates ride-alongs, spot checks, and driving evaluations of existing employees with student Training and Safety staff 
  • Completes documentation and reports relating to hiring, training, and ongoing training and safety-related activities 
  • Coordinates activities relating to the Public Transit Agency Safety Plan
  • Additional duties to support the public transit operations 

Location: West Campus Transportation Center (WCTC). 

Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm, hours will vary based on training activity 

Pay: $53,000- commensurate

 

About Parking and Transportation:

The Parking and Transportation Department provides and supports access, mobility, and transportation services to faculty, staff, students, patients, and visitors of The University of Iowa. A unit of the Parking and Transportation Department, CAMBUS is the university’s on-campus bus transportation system. CAMBUS is an FTA-funded system and services are no fare and open to the public. CAMBUS services are operated by University of Iowa student employees.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid Class B CDL and ability to meet/maintain UI Driving policy standards.
  • Minimum 2 years’ licensed driving Class B vehicle with passenger endorsement and airbrakes restriction lifted.
  • Experience (typically 1 year) in a customer service role.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Comply with required drug and alcohol testing in accordance with DOT/FTA regulations.
  • Ability to obtain state DOT certification to conduct 3rd party CDL knowledge and skills tests within 1 year of employment including passing DOT background check.
  • Ability to meet DOT safety-sensitive position requirements, including required FTA drug and alcohol testing.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience operating Class B transit buses in urban environment. 
  • Experience providing classroom and behind-the-wheel instruction to new drivers obtaining a Class B CDL for the first time. 
  • Performance management experience.
  • Supervisory and/or training experience in transit operations.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations relating to public transit services.

Candidates selected for interview will be required to give a 5-minute safety presentation on a bus-related topic to the interview committee.

 

Successful candidates will be required to self-disclose any conviction history and will be subject to a criminal background check and driver’s license verification. Up to 5 professional references will be requested at a later step in the recruitment process.
