The Tippie College of Business Chief Operating Officer (COO) is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the college and setting the operational direction in alignment with the college’s strategic priorities. The COO leads the information technology, facilities, and administrative teams to ensure efficient and effective management of resources and operations. The COO also leads the strategic planning process for the college and maintains oversight of progress toward its vision, mission, and strategic priorities. Through operational support, program administration, project management, quality and operational improvement, this position coordinates closely with the CFO and the Senior HR Director to ensure that internal operations are aligned and functioning efficiently. The COO is a member of the Senior Management Team and reports directly to the dean of the college. 

Specific Job Duties and Tasks

  • Lead and manage the information technology, facilities, and administrative teams. Provide guidance to the team and foster collaboration.
  • Lead and support special administrative and budget-related projects.
  • Lead strategic planning for the college in collaboration with the dean and the senior staff in strategic planning and policy sessions.
  • Implement, evaluate, and direct activities to accomplish the college’s strategic plan.
  • Work with the Chief Data Officer to determine and align key performance indicators for strategic priorities.
  • Prepare reports for the Board of Regents and other agencies or institutions as requested.
  • Manage the communication of relevant policies and procedures to appropriate stakeholders.
  • Utilize change management best practices to facilitate structural and procedural change in the college, including effective communication across collegiate units.
  • Work closely with the college Chief Financial Officer and Senior HR Director to align financial strategies, personnel changes, and operational policies with the college’s strategic initiatives.
  • Approve unit budgets (non-academic) with CFO to ensure alignment with college priorities.
  • Work closely with Senior Associate Dean on academic unit budgets to ensure alignment with college priorities.
  • Effectively uses a broad range of methods in communicating complex ideas to various populations.
  • Monitors profession/field/discipline for trends and implements innovative solutions to enhance service.

Education Requirement

  • Master’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.


Required Qualifications

  • Comprehensive (typically 7-10 years) of related experience in administration or business operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement strategic initiatives.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated constructive and collaborative relationship building skills with a variety of individuals and groups, including peers, leadership, and external constituents.
  • Commitment to promoting a welcoming and respectful workplace environment.

Desired Qualifications

  • Proven ability to form and manage effective teams.
  • Considerable knowledge of university policies, procedures, and regulations.
