The University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center Downtown (located at 500 E. Market Street, Iowa City, IA) is seeking a full-time Chemistry Supervisor. UI Health Care Medical Center Downtown (MCD) campus.

This position ensures the smooth, efficient operation of a clinical laboratory unit. Performs clinical laboratory analyses on biological specimens to provide information used in the diagnosis, prevention or treatment of disease.  Many of these procedures involve numerous highly complex tests and techniques that require the use of professional judgment. This position will have responsibility for leading other laboratory professionals and continuously interacting and consulting with section management and other allied health care professionals.


University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center Downtown (located at 500 E. Market Street, Iowa City, IA) is a 194-bed hospital that became part of Iowa’s only comprehensive academic health system on Jan. 31, 2024.

Schedule: Monday through Friday 7:00 am - 3:30 pm, rotating holidays.

Position Responsibilities Administration and Operational Management

•    Perform quantitative and qualitative analyses on clinical specimens.
•    Serve as the technical expert for patient test result interpretation, specific tasks, work processes and procedures performed in a unit.
•    Communicate and disseminate general information and policy or procedure changes to unit personnel.
•    Plan, prioritize and direct work activities in the designated unit to ensure smooth and efficient operation.
•    Investigate and resolve problems concerning patient testing and procedures. 
•    Assist with interviewing and selecting new staff.
•    Provide leadership for discipline-specific work groups.
•    Participate in the design and implementation of new procedures and instrumentation.
•    Monitor equipment performance, diagnose instrument problems/malfunctions and make repairs or initiate service requests.
•    Participate with the Assistant Lab Manager conducting performance appraisals.
•    Participate in the formal progressive disciplinary process.  Conduct, monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of employee performance improvement plans.
•    Assist the Assistant Lab Manager in undergraduate education rotations.  
•    Monitor quality control, quality assurance and proficiency testing; implement corrective actions for effective testing.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

•   Master’s degree + 3 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. 

•    A Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, biological, clinical laboratory science or medical technology program from an accredited college/university, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
•    Reasonable (1 – 3 years) clinical laboratory experience within the past five (5) years.
•    Certification as Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), or specialist certification in appropriate laboratory discipline from American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) from Health Education and Welfare (HEW). 
•    Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
•    Demonstrated leadership abilities and skills shown by successfully leading teams/groups in projects, work assignments, policy updates, etc.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

•    Prior experience directly supervising staff in a clinical laboratory setting or in a direct patient care or patient care support services setting.
•    Experience with validation and implementation of new testing or instruments.
•    Experience with laboratory inspection and accreditation activities.
•    Experience working in an academic health center.
•    Knowledge of and applied experience working with collective bargaining work rules.
•    Experience with personnel, team, or project management.
•    Experience developing and delivering laboratory sciences-based technical training.
•    Experience working with total laboratory automation.
•    Experience working with middleware.
•    Excellent documentation skills.
