Iowa Health Care department of Patient Financial Services is seeking a Compliance Coordinator in Research to promote and support policies and procedures to implement and maintain compliant research billing processes for clinical trials and research studies conducted by University of Iowa research investigators.

 

This position is primarily a combination of remote and onsite (hybrid) work locations.  Remote work must be performed at an offsite location within the State of Iowa.  Training will be held either on ONSITE at the HSSB building or via zoom, with location and length of training determined by the supervisor.  Remote eligibility will be evaluated upon a satisfactory job training opportunity.  Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location.

Position Responsibilities:

 

  • Develop and support program objectives of the Research Billing Compliance program.

  • Coordinate submission of research billing materials received from research investigators; prepare documents for review and analysis related to research billing compliance. Contact the research study team and/or Principal Investigator as necessary to clarify information in study protocols, consent documents, budgets, etc.

  • Conduct Medicare coverage analyses and develop research billing plans for clinical trials conducted at UI Health Care.

  • Perform detailed analysis of Epic charge accounts, reviewing which charges are related to the study, which are billable to insurance, and which are billable to the study, relative to the research billing plan. Apply Medicare and institutional billing requirement/regulations to the charge review. Identify variances between actual charges received and expected charges, based on the research billing plan.

  • Counsel and provide information to research investigators regarding the University of Iowa research billing policy and procedures, and Medicare/other third-party research billing rules. Train and educate research investigators on compliant research billing procedures.

  • Serve as liaison to research investigators and to personnel in the Division of Sponsored Programs, the Human Subjects Office, and Patient Financial Services on issues related to research billing compliance.

  • Perform administrative tasks for the Research Billing Compliance program, including receiving and responding to emails and phone calls, preparing correspondence, and managing both paper and electronic files.

  • Maintain and monitor an internal research billing database of clinical trials; prepare occasional reports.

  • Perform auditing activities of clinical trials to ensure compliance with research billing regulations and policies.

Location: Hospital Support Services Building (HSSB) located in Coralville, IA

Equipment:

 

  • Onsite – The department will provide a workstation which contains 3 (three) monitors, laptop/power cord, docking station/power cord, keyboard, mouse, headset, and desk supplies can be found in the supply closet.

  • Hybrid – while working onsite, the department will provide a workstation which contains 3 (three) monitors, a laptop/power cord, docking station/power cord, keyboard, mouse, headset, and desk supplies. When working offsite, the employee will take their laptop/power cord to carry back and forth, a second docking station/power cord to keep offsite. Prior to working offsite, the employee, at their own expense, will need to supply 2 (two) monitors, a keyboard, a mouse, and provide a screen shot of the domicile internet speed (minimum 30mb download and 10mb upload) and a picture of the office setup.

  • Remote - when working offsite, the department will provide the employee a laptop/power cord, docking station/power cord, headset. Prior to working offsite, the employee, at their own expense, will need to supply 2 (two) monitors, a keyboard, a mouse, and provide a screen shot of the domicile internet speed (minimum 30mb download and 10mb upload) and a picture of the office setup.

Education Required:

 

  • A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • 1-3 years administrative and program experience
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Proficiency in MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel and data management software
  • High degree of flexibility and adaptability coupled with the ability to effectively work independently and with a team.
  • Proven analytic, organizational and multi-tasking skills 
 

Desired Qualifications:

 

  • Administrative and program experience in an academic or research related setting

  • Knowledge of University of Iowa Health Care policies & procedures

  • Experience and knowledge of Patient Financial Services’ functions, systems, processes & policies

  • Familiarity with University of Iowa Institutional Review Board (IRB) processes and procedures

  • Knowledge of medical terminology

  • Experience with clinical trial budgets

  • Understanding of Medicare regulations

  • Experience with research coordination
