Custodian I
Hancher Auditorium is seeking an individual to join the custodial team. Hancher is one of the leading university presenters of the performing arts in the nation and has earned a reputation for excellence. The custodial team works alongside other operations departments to ensure that all guests and artists entering the building have an amazing experience. Programming ranges from small jazz ensembles in a club setting to sold out Broadway shows in the main hall and everything in between. There are no two days, weeks or months that are the same. The Hancher custodial team is at the heart of all the activities keeping the building shining for our audience as well as the artists performing onstage.
Position Summary:
- Under direct supervision, performs custodial duties for the general maintenance of Hancher Auditorium
- Due to the many events in the building, schedules will fluctuate week to week. Some nights and weekends will need to be worked. Days off will vary depending on rotation of staff and how many events are scheduled for the week.
Specific Job Duties & Tasks:
- Maintains floor surfaces that include terrazzo, carpet, VCT, and polished and sealed concrete surfaces utilizing the appropriate methods that include but are not limited to; vacuuming, shampooing, sweeping, mopping, stripping, scrubbing, waxing, and buffing. Performs cleaning of all floor areas such as vacuuming, shampooing, sweeping, mopping, stripping, scrubbing, waxing, and buffing.
- Cleans, sanitizes, and polishes all restroom fixtures, partitions, mirrors, and counter surfaces. Operates high pressure, water-cleaning apparatus to clean and disinfect rest rooms and showers.
- Refills soap, bathroom tissue, paper towels, and other dispensers as required.
- Collects waste and refuse from receptacles placed throughout the building and disposes of in approved collection containers.
- Performs duties in the immediate exterior of building such as sweeping sidewalks, snow and ice removal at entrances, cleaning debris from grounds, and cleaning exterior windows.
- Cleans audience seating areas including aisles, rows, and under and around seats. Vacuums seat and chair upholstery and removes stains, gum, etc. as needed from all surfaces.
- Cleans and washes all interior and exterior glass surfaces as appropriate. The use of a ladder and/or man-lift up to 12 feet in height may be required.
- Cleans ceiling and wall surfaces as needed. Replaces lamps and cleans light fixtures. The use of a ladder and/or man-lift up to 12 feet in height may be required.
- Must be able to assist in moving and setup of tables and chairs or other furniture required for events and meetings.
- Assists in maintaining inventory of custodial supplies, and keeps and prepares other records and reports as directed.
- Performs basic level maintenance of cleaning equipment. Changing vacuum bags, clearing obstructions, cleaning brushes. Report maintenance issues to supervisor.
- Moves supplies and miscellaneous equipment within the building; place and remove entrance walk-off mats as needed.
- Assist with seasonal projects (strip floors,landings, etc.; various other building upkeep projects
- Collect and report lost and found items.
- Participate in training for new processes or assisting to train new workers
- Interact with patrons, direct, intervene/help with needs

Minimum Eligibility Requirements:
- Ability to read, write and follow directions.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Previous custodial experience.
- Experience with “green cleaning” products, equipment, and cleaning techniques.
- Project work knowledge and use of custodial equipment.
- Experience with public contact.
- Customer service experience.
- Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.
