University Housing & Dining is seeking a Custodian II to assign, review, coordinate and inspect custodial activities in the area of assignment in accordance with established guidelines. Supervisor is available on short notice to assist in the resolution of problems.


The schedule for this position is 7:15AM to 4:00PM, working every third weekend.  May also work occasional overtime to cover absences and peak period of operation.


Duties to include:

  • Performing front-line custodial duties.
  • Conferring with supervisor and receiving written and oral instructions concerning general custodial duties. 
  • Developing work schedules and directing and inspecting daily work routines of other custodial services. 
  • Maintaining inventory of linen and record of linen laundering; maintaining inventory of custodial supplies and keeping and preparing other records and reports as directed. 
  • Assisting in planning procedures and work methods and advising or recommending revisions for the purpose of improving the efficiency of operations and services. 
  • Interviewing and recommending the hiring of custodial personnel, as required.

Minimum Eligibility Requirements:

  • Ability to read, write and follow instructions.

  • One year of custodial or related experience.


Desirable Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of standard cleaning techniques and characteristics of surfaces to be cleaned, and equipment and supplies required.

  • Ability to move furniture and objects in preparation for cleaning; to load and unload trash receptacles; to operate safely and properly care for power machinery; to use arm muscles in hand cleaning, mopping, and scrubbing for protracted periods of time; to work on ladders.

  • Knowledge of proper bending and lifting techniques and ability to lift and carry 50 pounds.

  • Ability to work in a variety of environments including crowded public areas and high and low temperature areas.

  • Knowledge of the safe use of chemical cleaning agents and possible hazards relating to environmental sanitation.

  • Ability to lead, train and motivate employees.

  • Ability to write and maintain routing records and reports such as employee attendance, supply usage, and repairs needed.

  • Ability to communicate effectively and follow oral and written instructions.

  • Experience performing labor-intensive work in a residence hall, apartment complex, hotel, hospital, nursing home, or similar residential facility.

  • Customer service experience.

  • Interest in and the ability to learn basic computer and keyboarding skills; including the ability to access and draft email correspondence and the ability to manage electronic time accruals and personal absence requests.  Previous experience highly desired.

  • Experience working in a diverse work environment.

  • Ability to exhibit a high level of confidentiality and professionalism.
