Perform dental assistance to Geriatric and Special Needs faculty, graduate students, and pre-doctoral students.  The Geriatric and Special Needs Clinic (GSNC) primarily provides dental services to physically, mentally and/or cognitively impaired adults.  For a full job description, please send an e-mail to COD-Requisitions@iowa.uiowa.edu.


  • Prepares and maintains dental operatory areas for patient treatment and laboratory area, using prescribed infection control procedures.

     

  • Organizes patient delivery pre-set trays with appropriate instruments, sets out prescribed materials and armamentarium for scheduled procedures.

     

  • Picks up, passes and receives appropriate instruments for dental procedure being done.

     

  • Keeps moving intra-oral suction and correct utilization of the air-water syringe so that there is a clean and dry field of operation.

  • Manipulates dental materials, following prescribed directions.

     

  • Maintain calm, quiet, and supportive atmosphere for patients with medical, physical or cognitive compromises.

     

  • Communicates verbally and nonverbally with the staff, faculty, students and patients in a positive and constructive way.

     

Dental Assistant II – GC25 (Merit)

College of Dentistry – Preventive & Community Dentistry (Iowa City, IA)

Salary:  $34,730.72 (Pay Grade:  08)

 

An advanced starting salary may be possible based on exceptional qualifications.

 


Schedule:  Monday – Friday, 8:00am – 5:00pm            May require occasional overtime.

MINIMUM ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

 

1.     Successful completion of an ADAA dental assistance program or two years of chairside assistant experience assisting in four-handed method of dentistry.

2.     Must have a current certificate of registration to practice as a dental assistant issued by the Iowa Board of Dental Examiners.

3.     Must possess current Iowa certificate of proficiency in dental radiography.

 

Applicants must have the following, by time of appointment:

 

1.     Successful completion of ADAA-accredited dental assistant program or 24 full-time months chairside dental assisting experience in four-handed dental practice.

2.     Must have a current certificate of registration to practice as a dental assistant issued by the Iowa Board of Dental Examiners.

3.     Must possess current Iowa certificate of proficiency in dental radiography.

 

HIGHLY Desirable:


1.     Experience working with special needs patients and/or those who have medical, psychological, or behavioral health challenges, including the frail elderly.


Desirable:


1.       Certified Dental Assistant;

2.       Expanded Function Certification;

3.       2 years dental assisting experience;

4.       Ability to communicate concepts effectively; and

5.       Experience working with electronic health records.
