Dental Assistant, Intra-Oral/Cranio Surgery Tech (50%-60%), Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

The Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry is looking for a motivated Intra-Oral/Craniofacial Surgery Technician to join our team. Spend your days assisting chairside, developing radiographs, and interacting with patients. This is a part-time, 20-24 hours per week position. Responsibilities:
· Provides chairside assistance to patients cared for by faculty, residents, and dental students.
· Assist in preparation of operatories, surgical trays, equipment, patient records, and supplies as needed in patient care.
· Seat patients upon arrival and prepare them for screenings, post ops and surgical procedures.
· Assists with IV sedation, surgical procedures, and patient recovery.
· Monitor patient vital signs under Dr. and R.N. supervision.
· Plays key role in supporting the patient airway during surgical procedures while multitasking with their dental assistant duties (anticipating the doctor’s needs in the passing of instruments, applying suction as needed, etc.), closely observing the respiratory effort and listening to the patient monitors. Make quick adjustments to maintain an open airway.
· Applies knowledge related to emergency situations and surgical procedures in the surgical setting.
· Anticipates the needs of the patient and the surgeon.
· Prepares surgical area for patient care and anticipates the needs of the surgical team.
· Sanitizes (clean and disinfect) operatory and equipment after each patient visit.
· Coordinates proper instrument tray setups and equipment necessary for planned procedures.
· Provides for proper care, handling and maintenance of equipment, instruments, supplies, and implants.
· Demonstrates knowledge of surgical equipment and advanced surgical instrumentation.
· Obtains past medical history and other pertinent medical information from the patient and/or legal guardian.
· Assists medical alert team.
· Assists in providing orientation/guidance to new staff and rotating dental students.
· Additional duties as assigned.
50%-60% Intra-Oral/Craniofacial Surgery Technician – GC30 (Merit)

Location: Dental Science Building
Salary: $25,057.68 - $31,240.88 to commensurate (at 50% time) (Pay Grade: 10)
An advanced starting salary may be possible based on exceptional qualifications.
Schedule: 20 - 24 hours - TBD – Monday through Friday
Regularly scheduled shifts between 8-5
May require occasional overtime
Work Location: On-Site
1. Successful completion of a CODA accredited dental assistance program or one year of full time equivalent chairside assistant experience assisting in four-handed method of dentistry.
2. Must have a current certificate of registration to practice as a dental assistant issued by the Iowa Board of Dental Examiners (QDA).
3. Must possess current Iowa certificate of proficiency in dental radiography (QDA).
4. Must possess current certification in ACLS or PALS or DAANCE.
Desirable Qualifications:
· Knowledge of dental assisting skills required for Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.
· Experience assisting sedated patients.
· Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
· Experience assisting dental implant procedures.
