Dental Assistant, Prosthodontics (80%-100%)
The University of Iowa Health Care department of Hospital Dentistry Institute has an opportunity for an 80%-100% Dental Assistant to provide chairside hands-on support in our General Practice and Prosthodontic Clinic. This position will assist our care providers with scheduled care, emergency and walk-in care and in-patient consultations. Duties also include assisting our care providers in our ambulatory clinic, the Main Operating Room and in the Ambulatory Surgery Center. Regular attendance is an essential function of this job.
Duties to include:
· Maintains and prepares appropriate dental instrument trays
· Prepares and maintains patient dental records
· Uses dental materials according to manufacturers’ specifications
· Performs proper radiographic techniques
About Hospital Dentistry
Hospital Dentistry Institute General Dentistry/Prosthodontic division serves a variety of patients, from head and neck cancer/radiation patients, transplant patients and immunocompromised patients with UI Health Care. We also screen all orthopedic joint replacement patients and cardiac surgical patients, providing dental care and dental clearance prior to surgery. We provide dental care in an operating room setting for pediatric patients and mentally/physically disabled patients of all ages. Our dentists also provide routine dental care and dental hygiene services to the community and to those who work at UI Health Care and the University.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions
- Ability to communicate effectively with others
- Knowledge of principles, methods and techniques of dental assistant work as instructed in CODA accredited educational programs
- Ability to work in close quarters with dental faculty and students while maintaining a positive environment for patients
- Ability to maintain a certificate of proficiency in dental radiography required by the Iowa Board of Dental Examiners
- Ability to operate necessary technology, machines, and instruments used in dental assistance duties

Percent of Time: 80%-100%Hourly: $21.88 to commensurate
Schedule: 0800-1700 Monday-Friday with 1 hour lunch break. No rotating shifts, no weekends, no holidays, no call.

Minimum Eligibility Requirements:
- Successful completion of a CODA accredited dental assistance program or one-year full time equivalency in chairside assistant experience assisting in four-handed method of dentistry
- Must have a current certificate of registration to practice as a dental assistant issued by the Iowa Board of Dental Examiners (QDA)
- Must possess current Iowa certificate of proficiency in dental radiography (QDA)
- No additional work experience beyond the requirements for this position
- May require Expanded Functions (EF-1 and/or EF-2) based on specific needs assigned by provider
Desirable Qualifications
- Prefer Prosthodontic experience
- Prefer Surgical Implant experience
- Experience working with an electronic health record
- Experience working with Elderly and Medically Compromised patients.
