Education Requirement
- Master’s degree in Student Development, Counseling, Higher Education or English or a related field, or an equivalent combination of training and experience providing a comparable level of expertise.
Experience Required
- Experience (typically one to three years) working in a higher education graduate student advising office including performing substantial career services and fellowships services is required.
- Demonstrates giving writing advice and feedback to graduate students regarding the career paths and opportunities, including both academic and non-academic jobs.
- Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly in context of providing constructive developmental editing and writing feedback; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through appropriate communication methods and behaviors at a working proficiency level is required.
- Working proficiency with word processing, spreadsheets, presentation, database, web content management, and data visualization is required.
- Demonstrated working proficiency in the ability to work with variety of individuals and groups in a constructive manner while appreciating the unique contribution of diverse individuals is required.
Desirable Qualifications
- Demonstrates giving writing advice and feedback to students regarding nationally competitive fellowships/grants available to graduate students in HSS fields (e.g., Mellon/CLIR, ACLS/Mellon) and across disciplines (e.g., AAUW, Ford Foundation), with the ability to support advising on other fellowships/grants as needed, is required.
- Experience and working proficiency in public speaking and/or teaching is desirable.
- Experience and working proficiency with graduate student programs and liaison is desirable.
- Experience or familiarity with individual Development Plan (IDP) advising resources (e.g., ImaginePhD, myIDP) is desirable.
- Some knowledge of University of Iowa policies, procedures and regulations is desirable.
