The University of Iowa Health Care is seeking an Electroneurodiagnostic Technologist (END Tech) to support the Electromyography (EMG) lab. This position will perform routine nerve conduction studies in the laboratory, off-site locations, patient bedside, and operating room.   

Job Duties to Include:

  • Perform routine nerve conduction studies (i.e., motor nerve conductions, sensory nerve conductions, F-waves, H-reflexes, and other techniques used to provide electrodiagnostic evidence in support of neuropathic diseases) in the laboratory, off-site locations, patient bedside, and operating room.
  • Analyze acquired data and apply appropriate techniques and procedures to provide diagnostic outcomes based on individual patient needs.
  • Organize and generate data reports for diagnostic review by interpreting physicians.
  • Assist interpreting physician with the electromyography (EMG) procedure. 
  • Recognize correlations between nerve conduction studies and electromyography (EMG) findings as relevant for diagnosis.
  • Interact and educate patients to promote understanding of procedures to ensure patient comfort and safety.
  • Communicate with patients in an appropriate manner to relay and obtain information necessary for the procedure. 
  • Provide quality control of equipment: recognizing malfunction, troubleshooting and/or alerting appropriate personnel.
  • Keep and organize records, database, and data archival system.
  • Clean laboratory in accordance with hospital standards. 
  • Provide support for laboratory clerical employees including appointment scheduling, billing, and report completion.
  • Participate in the instruction of technical and professional staff including, electroneurodiagnostic students; technologists, medical residents, neurophysiology and neuromuscular fellows; and other staff in methods of nerve conduction studies.
  • Support quality patient care through orientation and staff education.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and the public.

Percent of Time: 100%   

Schedule: This position works Monday-Friday. No holidays or weekends.   

Supervision Received: Supervision received by EMG Lab Supervisor, attending physician, or other qualified designee.    

Supervision Exercised: Functional supervision is exercised over support staff, students, residents, and fellows.

Required Qualifications

  • Completion of a 24-month END Technology program or other applicable program, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Eligible for certification by the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic Technologists (i.e., R. EEG T.), American Association of Electrodiagnostic Technologists (i.e., R.NCS.T.), American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine (i.e., CNCT), or other applicable nationally recognized certifying agency.  Certification within nine (9) months following the start of employment is required.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with patients/families, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary team members as demonstrated through written and verbal interactions.
  • General computer skills

  • Proven ability to multi-task, prioritize, and coordinate multiple duties.
