The Department of Radiation Oncology, Medical Physics Division, is seeking an Engineer whose responsibility will be to develop, validate, release, maintain, and support algorithms, scripts, queries, and other computational solutions primarily to research problems. This includes training others on the use of the software systems that are developed and automation of tasks as appropriate, often in clinical research collaborations. Will work with vendors of departmental software systems to leverage existing features and supplement these systems with in-house scripts as appropriate, often in clinical research collaborations. Will be responsible for adapting computational solutions as the available software tools advance with new releases. Will provide general software-related troubleshooting and support for the assigned systems within Radiation Oncology. Some characteristic duties and responsibilities include the following:

  • Analysis: Compile and analyze information required to perform engineering assignments. Prepare progress reports, documentation of solutions, and engineering specifications.
  • Engineering Project Management: Participate in the preparation of engineering specifications. Complete engineering assignments in accordance with design specifications and standards.
  • Compliance: Complete work that meets all relevant specifications and regulations including HIPAA. Verify that completed work meets Departmental needs and is quality-assured.
  • Planning: Involved in project planning subject to need.
  • Application of Technical Knowledge: Understand and may apply engineering principles and the scientific method to solve technical issues as assigned. Solve computational problems with a high-level programming tools such as C++, Python, and Matlab. Develop and sustain competency with commercially available software tools used in the clinic and for research in Radiation Oncology including Elekta Mosaiq, Elekta Monaco, Philips Pinnacle, and Varian Velocity. Administer a Linux-based GPU cluster.
  • Communication: Communicate with faculty, staff and students. Document solutions provided for departmental faculty and staff and maintain that documentation. Provide training for usage of solutions.
  • Leadership: May provide functional supervision for staff and students related to technical usage of departmental software.
  • Financial: Provide information to estimate project costs. Initiate purchasing requests for supplies and equipment.



Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Proficiency with a high-level programming language such as Matlab, C++, or Python.

Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.


Proficiency with Linux operating system.

Experience working in Radiation Oncology or Radiology.

Experience with medical image processing and/or analysis.
