Equipment Operator
The University of Iowa Landscape Services is seeking a highly motivated person to work as an Equipment Operator. This position will be a floater amongst different crews with focus on material hauling and handling, maintenance of trees, shrubs, flower beds, turf and hardscapes. Under direct supervision, operates and maintains power equipment, truck and light machinery and performs other labor required to landscape and maintain campus grounds. During inclement winter weather this position will be required to assist in snow and ice removal in a variety of equipment that may include skid steers, plow trucks, sander, or Polar Trac
Job Duties to Include:
- Mowing, trimming, mulching, weeding, pruning, leaf removal
- Operate skid loaders, JCB, tractors, and attachments
- Perform snow removal in plow truck and/or skid loader
- Assist other Landscape Services units as needed such as the Tree Crew, Turf Crew, etc.
- Haul materials such as soil, sand, gravel in dump truck.
- Communicate w/ Supervisor, staff, and customers.
- Perform minor repairs and service work on equipment.
- Use technology as required in fulfilment of position (e.g., email, Employee Self Service, work order system).

Schedule: Monday through Friday, 6:00 am to 2:30 pm; Due to the critical operational needs of the department, this position may be required to work overtime.
During inclement weather, required to answer phone as early as 2:30 am, and return to campus as early as 4 am for
snow/ice removal

About Facilities Management:
Facilities Management (FM) is a service unit of approximately 500 employees who work behind the scenes, 24 hours a day, serving the University of Iowa as stewards of our beautiful Iowa City campus and Oakdale campus in Coralville. FM staff coordinate campus master planning, manage design and construction, maintain, and clean the buildings and grounds.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements
- Two years of related landscape equipment operating experience.
- Possession of Class B CDL with air brakes or Class A with air brakes preferred and ability to meet University Driving Policy standards.
Desirable Qualifications
- General landscape maintenance skills: Plant ID, weeding, pruning, planting, and turf maintenance
- Experience operating snow/ice removal equipment such as truck mounted snowplow, sander, skid-steer, polar trac, snow blower, or UTV
- Commercial experience operating large landscape equipment such as: dump truck, skid loaders, telehandlers, tractors and attachments
- Good communication skills and experience working on a team
- Basic computer experience
- Preventative maintenance and troubleshooting experience
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions
- Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives
