The Patients’ Library is seeking an Expert Librarian at Iowa Health Care, who will manage and curate an extensive collection of library materials encompassing a diverse array of topics, ensuring access to the latest books, games, and other education and distraction-based items staff, patients, and families. The Expert Librarian role involves developing and maintaining digital and physical collections, providing expert reference services, and supporting evidence-based practice through literature searches and information retrieval. The Expert Librarian will also collaborate with medical staff to enhance patient care and education, conduct training sessions on information literacy, and stay updated on advancements in medical librarianship. Library expertise will be crucial in fostering a knowledge-rich environment that promotes continuous learning and high-quality healthcare delivery.

Job Duties include but are not limited to:

  •          Provide comprehensive support services to clinical and non-clinical departments.
  •          Coordinate and deliver tailored services for patients.
  •          Maintain high level of satisfaction for patients, staff, and visitors.
  •          Supervise the delivery of services including but not limited to health information, Story Time, and entertainment and distraction items.
  •          Supervise staff across the Patient’s Library and Stead Family Children’s Library, delegate tasks, hire, develop/coach, support the scheduling of staff, and         follow up on all performance concerns.
  •          Communicate and collaborate with peers, co-workers, patrons, hospital departments, and external agencies to enhance the delivery of services promptly.
  •          Review and resolve requests and issues from staff, patients, and visitors promptly.
  •          Develop programs, policies, and practices that enhance patient/staff safety, satisfaction, and improve service.
  •          Manage funding acquisition through grants, endowments, and other funding opportunities.
  •          Lead and participate in high-level strategic operational meetings and discussions.
  •          Contribute to a positive work environment for staff, visitors, and all UI Employees by being an active listener when new ideas are brought forward.
  •          Delegate work to empower staff to grow professionally and take ownership of their respective areas.
  •          Communicate with staff regularly by scheduling 1:1’s, team meetings, and rounding to offer support and encouragement.
  •          Following, and administering, the Professional Behavioral Standards set forth by the Office of the Patient Experience.
  •          Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree from an American Libraries Association (ALA) accredited program or other appropriate advanced degree.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team-based setting with consultation, flexibility, collaboration, and cooperation. 
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office and computer software applications.
  •         A minimum of seven years of relevant experience, including at least four years managerial and leadership experience in an academic or research library.
  •         Evidence of progressively increasing leadership, supervisory, or managerial responsibility.
  •         Demonstrated experience in strategic planning and implementation.
  •         Demonstrated understanding of current and emerging trends, issues, workflow, standards, and best practices in the management of healthcare collections, both circulating and non-circulating, with a strong commitment to user-centered design of services and collections.
  •         Experience working with donors and developing external funding opportunities. Knowledge of regulations and compliance requirements for non-cash gifts and sponsored programs.
  •         Demonstrated ability to work successfully in a collaborative management environment and to function effectively as a member of a leadership team.
  •         Demonstrated success in writing and administering grants.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a library setting.
  • Demonstrated proficiency utilizing various library databases.
  • Ability to be organized, flexible, and multi-task in a high volume and fast-paced environment.
  •        Experience working with community stakeholder groups and community advisory committees.
  •        Familiarity with exhibit curation and design of both physical and digital exhibitions.
  •        Familiarity with born-digital and digital archive collections.
