Financial Analyst - Cancer Center
The Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Iowa is seeking a Financial Analyst who will be responsible for performing complex accounting functions, budget, and financial analysis compliant responsibilities within the clinical trial operations of the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center (HCCC) Clinical Research Services (CRS). This role will support the modernization of our billing system and ensure thorough financial auditing of clinical trials to recoup revenue and maintain billing compliance.
This position is eligible for hybrid work within Iowa and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of your employment. Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually, and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location.
Duties to include:
70 % Financial Oversight and Budgeting:
- Assist with the retroactive analysis of clinical trial budgets, thoroughly examining and reconciling trials with the goal of ensuring billing compliance and enhancing revenue recovery.
- Monitor clinical trial account expenditures, irregularities, answer inquiries regarding usage and status of accounts; advise in usage and status of account; provide recommendations and implement corrective action.
- Assist with the closing of clinical trial accounts.
- Assist in the development of financial proformas for financial planning and presentations.
- Analyze and audit account statements and reports to verify compliance with source of funding guidelines.
- Maintain account balances and reconcile differences between various account balances and external sources.
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to conduct comprehensive financial audits of trials.
20% Financial Reporting:
- Complete account reconciliations pertaining to patients on clinical trials.
- Assist with submitting invoices for services rendered by CRS faculty and staff. Monitor outstanding accounts and routine account reporting.
- Ensure information is current and accurate; prepare and respond to reports and inquiries.
- Assist Research Billing Compliance (RBC) Office with filtering and assigning patient expenses to insurance or industry sponsor in accordance with the budget and using EPIC, Tableau, and Oncore. Serve as liaison with the Joint Office of Compliance regarding billing compliance issues.
- Work with the Senior Financial Analyst to ensure and maintain proper internal controls throughout the clinical trial financial lifecycle.
- Provide recommendations and thoroughly examine internal and external payables.
5% Leadership
- Participate on assigned workgroups and committees charged with reviewing CRS administrative-level finances and practices; analyze information, provide recommendations, and implement changes as appropriate.
- Contribute to internal and external workgroups on clinical trial billing and budgeting best practices.
5% Education, Training & Compliances
- Participate in internal and external training opportunities related to clinical trial billing and budgeting best practices.
- May contribute to implementation of policies, guidance documents, and standard operating procedures. May perform external reporting requiring compliance with reporting standards.
- May provide training and functional and/or administrative supervision for staff.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or Accounting or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum 1 year accounting and/or financial experience
- Exhibit a high degree of conscientiousness, self-motivation, and a passion for continuous learning, with a strong desire to tackle tough and challenging projects
- Experience managing complex financial information requiring strong attention to detail
- General knowledge of accounting practices
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
- Ability to multitask
- Ability to work with minimal supervision and collaborate with cross-functional teams
- Demonstrated proficiency in computer software applications, including Microsoft Excel
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with financial contracts
- Experience with University insurance and/or billing process
- Experience with or knowledge of clinical trials/human subject research
- Familiarity with medical terminology
- Experience with University of Iowa accounting financial systems, business policies, procedures, and regulations
- Experience preparing and negotiating budgets
