Financial Analyst - Department of Surgery
University of Iowa Health Care is seeking a Financial Analyst to perform financial analysis, accounting, and reporting functions to support accurate, effective, and compliant departmental operations. The Financial Analyst applies established policies, procedures, and financial systems to manage assigned accounts, perform reconciliations, assist with budget preparation, and support financial planning activities. This position exercises judgment within defined guidelines and contributes analytical insight to support decision‑making, while operating under general direction and without department‑wide strategic responsibility.
Job Responsibilities
• Conduct analysis of financial information to assist with preparation and monitoring of unit and departmental budgets.
• Assist with preparation of accounting reports and financial information for assigned units.
• Review budget‑to‑actual activity and identify variances for discussion with supervisors or leadership.
• Support forecasting and financial planning activities using established tools, data sources, and processes.
• Monitor expenditures to ensure alignment with approved budgets and funding source requirements.
• Complete basic and complex recurring reconciliations and financial reporting following pre‑established procedures.
• Review account activity to ensure accuracy, compliance, and appropriate use of funds.
• Gather, compile, and submit information for benchmark surveys, questionnaires, and reporting requests required by the University, government agencies, or other external entities.
• Maintain thorough documentation to support reconciliations, reporting, and audit inquiries.
• Perform basic and limited financial analyses following established methodologies and processes.
• Conduct selected complex or non‑routine financial and statistical analyses under guidance or within defined parameters.
• Utilize moderate knowledge of financial systems to extract, analyze, and interpret data.
• Assist in the development of financial proformas, projections, and planning tools; summarize results for review by leadership or senior finance staff.
• Ensure financial activities comply with University policies, departmental procedures, and applicable regulations.
• Contribute to implementation of new or revised financial policies and procedures.
• Assist with internal and external financial reporting that requires adherence to established reporting standards.
• Identify potential compliance concerns and elevate issues appropriately.
• Perform minimal transaction processing as a result of analytical or reconciliatory work.
• Review, initiate, and correct accounting transactions, journal entries, and transfers identified during analysis.
• Coordinate with internal partners to resolve discrepancies and ensure accurate financial records.
• May provide training, guidance, or functional direction to staff related to financial processes, reconciliation procedures, and reporting tools.
• May provide limited functional or administrative oversight related to specific tasks or workflows.
• Serve as a resource to faculty and staff on financial procedures, policies, and best practices.
Percent of Time: 100%
Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Education Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience Requirements
• 1–3 years of relevant experience in accounting, budgeting, financial analysis, or financial reporting.
• Experience performing account reconciliations and preparing recurring financial reports.
• Demonstrated analytical, problem‑solving, and organizational skills.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet established deadlines.
Desired Qualifications
• Experience with University or higher‑education financial systems (e.g., Peoplesoft, GL Reporter, StrataJazz, EFR).
• Working knowledge of research or grant accounting and compliance fundamentals.
• Familiarity with University or healthcare financial policies and procedures.
• Experience supporting faculty, research, or operational units in an academic or healthcare environment.
