The University of Iowa, Landscape Services is seeking a highly motivated person to work as a Groundskeeper I. This position provides support to Groundskeeper II in assigned Campus Area; may provide assistance to other Landscape Services crews for projects as needed. Must have basic knowledge of grounds maintenance skills and equipment and hand tools. Working knowledge of plant material and care. During inclement winter weather this position will be required to assist in snow and ice removal in a variety of equipment that may include skid steers, plow trucks, sander, or Polar Trac. 

This position is performed fully on campus.

Duties to Include:

  • Responsible for maintaining assigned areas as outlined in the Landscape Services Management Plan
  • Perform snow removal using designated equipment, such as utility vehicle with sander, shovel, and snowblower
  • Assist other Landscape Services units as needed such as the Tree Crew, Turf Crew, by operating utility vehicle, mowers, skid loaders, JCB, tractors, etc. and attachments
  • Use technology as required in fulfilment of position (e.g., email, Employee Self Service, work order system)
  • May assign, coordinate, and review the work of other groundskeeping personnel in coordination with Landscape Management Supervisor
  • Perform minor repairs and service work on equipment
  • Communicate with supervisor, staff, and customers.
  • Driving to work locations
  • Other duties as assigned

Schedule: Monday through Friday, 6:00 am to 2:30 pm; Due to the critical operational needs of the department, this position may be required to work overtime. During inclement weather, required to answer phone as early as 2:30 am, and return to campus as early as 4 am for snow/ice removal.

About Facilities Management:

Facilities Management (FM) is a service unit of approximately 500 employees who work behind the scenes, 24 hours a day, serving the University of Iowa as stewards for our downtown Iowa City campus and Oakdale campus in Coralville. FM staff coordinate campus master planning, manage design and construction, and maintain and clean the buildings and grounds.

Minimum Eligibility Requirements:

  • One year of experience in operating the machinery and tools used in groundskeeping work or
  • Any combination of related experience and education from which comparable knowledge and ability can be acquired which totals one year.

Special Qualifications:

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet and maintain UI Fleet Safety Standards.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Two or more years previous groundskeeping experience
  • Experience operating snow/ice removal equipment
  • Class A or B CDL with Air Brakes
  • Good communication skills and experience working on a team
  • Basic computer experience
  • Preventative maintenance and troubleshooting experience
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives
