The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Downtown Campus is seeking a highly motivated person to work as a Groundskeeper I. This position will provide support to the Groundskeepers, perform turf maintenance, irrigation maintenance, assist the install crew and tree crew, and wherever else needed. The Groundskeeper must have basic knowledge of grounds maintenance skills, equipment, and hand tools. 

University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center Downtown (located at 500 E. Market Street, Iowa City, IA) is a 194-bed hospital that became part of Iowa’s only comprehensive academic health system on Jan. 31, 2024. 

Duties to Include:

  • Maintain a clean, orderly environment of exterior and designated interior areas of the facility. Maintains a clean work area and monitors equipment, reporting any malfunctions and needed repairs to the Environmental Services Manager or to the appropriate department.
  • Assure that tools, equipment, and chemicals are used for their intended purpose in a safe manner that prevents damage to people or property.
  • Maintains grounds by mowing, edging, trimming, and mulching. Clean and maintain flower beds, pull weeds, rake leaves, wash windows. Monitors watering levels for all plants.
  • Maintain a wide variety of landscapes including lawns, trees, shrubs, ornamental plantings, and turf grass. Under supervision, prepare and apply hazardous chemicals for pest and disease control on trees, shrubs, bushes, and turf.
  • Patrol parking lots and ramps for trash and debris daily as well as the exterior entrances of the building. Complete daily collection of trash from all receptacles outside of the building, place trash in compactor.
  • Remove snow on sidewalks and at entrances. Apply ice melt as needed to maintain a safe environment.
  • Clear drive lanes and apply sand/salt with truck in parking areas as needed.
  • Completes tasks as assigned with in the facility during times of inclement weather.
  • Adheres to all safety, infection control, and employee health policies and procedures. Appropriately and consistently uses all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Schedule: Monday through Friday, 6:00 am to 2:30 pm

Minimum Eligibility Requirements:

  • One year of experience in operating the machinery and tools used in groundskeeping work or
  • Any combination of related experience and education from which comparable knowledge and ability can be acquired which totals one year.

Special Qualifications:

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet and maintain UI Fleet Safety Standards.

 

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Prefer 2 years previous groundskeeping experience.
  • Good communication skills and experience working on a team.
  • Prefer basic computer experience.
  • Preventative maintenance and troubleshooting experience.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work with and around a diverse culture.
  • Class A or B CDL with Air Brakes
