University of Iowa Health Care is seeking a Health Records Associate to perform complex technical and related duties for the Department of Surgery Trauma and Burn registries, including entering, analyzing, reviewing, abstracting, and coding medical information obtained from a variety of EMS and outside hospital records as well as hospital data sources such as documents, reports, lab and radiology profiles, on-line records and other summaries initiated for University of Iowa Health Care.  Information abstracted is used for performance improvement, benchmarking, research, and is required for verification as a Level I Adult & Pediatric Trauma Center as well as a verified Burn Center.  The data is also reported to the Iowa Department of Public Health as required by the Iowa Trauma State Statute.  


Key Areas of Responsibilities:
Data Collection/Subject Recruitment
•    Screen cases to determine eligibility/reportability in research study.
•    May schedule eligible research subjects per the research protocol.
•    Coordinate, collect and integrate information.
•    Establish and maintain effective working relationships with referring entities and other research sites
Abstract, Code and Analyze Data
•    Perform basic abstracting and coding of data and determine data reportability.
•    Plan, organize and perform data collection and retention.
Data Integrity
•    Review non-medical information contained in abstracts/documents to determine accuracy.
•    Participate in quality control efforts.
Data Reporting
•    Interpret data and assist in the analysis of the data and writing of reports.
•    Assist with the design and development of related forms, manuals and reports.
Communication and Outreach
•    Maintain professional liaisons with hospitals, laboratories, physicians, staff and public.
•    Provide routine information to external agencies.
Leadership/Supervision
•    May train new staff in data collection procedures and quality control.

Department of Surgery:  The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Surgery is committed to saving lives and improving our patient's quality of life through excellent surgical techniques and extraordinary patient care. Our surgeons and medical professionals address a wide variety of complex medical issues, from matching donors with recipients in the Organ Transplant Center to providing continuous care for both adult and pediatric trauma victims in the state's only designated Level I Trauma Center and certified regional Burn Treatment Center.

Percent of Time:  100%

Schedule:  Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Education Requirement:
•    A bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Qualifications:
•    Certification as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or RN is required

Desirable Qualifications:
•    Knowledge of University of Iowa policies, procedures and regulations
•    Experience working with Trauma or Burn registries or other health care registries
•    Certified Specialist in Trauma Registries (CSTR)
•    Experience managing complex information requiring attention to detail
•    Demonstrated ability to work independently, needing minimal guidance
•    Knowledge of medical record coding practices, procedures and reference sources
•    Ability to interpret guidelines, criteria and definitions
•    Knowledge of human anatomy
•    Knowledge of medical terminology
•    Excellent organizational skills
•    Excellent written verbal communication and interpersonal skills
•    Proficient in Microsoft Office
