Field staff position for the State Health Registry of Iowa (SHRI), responsible for identification of reportable cases, abstraction of cancer data, participation in quality control projects and submission of high quality data following National Cancer Institute (NCI) Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) program and State Health Registry of Iowa (SHRI) guidelines. Also responsible for providing assistance to hospitals pursuing American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC) accreditation, including guidance on abstraction of cancer data and meeting program standards.   

 

Key Areas of Responsibility

Data Collection/Subject Recruitment        

  • Responsible for identifying reportable cancer cases and abstracting cancer data following National Cancer Institute (NCI) Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program and SHRI guidelines.
  • Resolve complex data collection issues and provide consultative support to participating referring entities and other research sites.
  • Determine the reportability of health data based upon documentation in patient medical records (clinical, surgical, pathologic, etc.).
  • Maintain understanding of Commission on Cancer program standards.

 

Abstract, Code and Analyze Data  

  • Provide input on revisions to abstracting, coding, and policy and procedure rules and guidelines.
  • Routinely analyze, compile, code and manage electronic systems and follow-up data; submit data files to central registry/unit meeting according to submission deadlines.
  • Consistently code American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) data fields according to AJCC guidelines.

 

Data Integrity

  • Formulate procedures for obtaining and processing data.
  • Develop procedures for completing case findings.
  • Perform epidemiology related research on specified human health topics and case abstracts according to current data management methodology.

 

Data Reporting         

  • Administer questionnaires and compile results.
  • Conduct presentations on data abstraction and/or CoC related standards.

 

Communication and Outreach

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with hospitals, laboratories, physicians, and local programs throughout state.
  • Provide consultative support to participating health care providers and local cancer management program and health data systems.
  • For hospitals pursuing CoC accreditation, assist with the following activities: provide guidance for Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR)-related performance standards; assist in training new registrars in computer systems, case-finding, abstracting, follow-up of reportable cases, medical terminology, and disease processes; perform review of abstracted cases to identify potential quality issues prior to CoC survey, assist in writing policies and procedures for new hospital registries and in maintaining Cancer Program Practice Profile Reports and Rapid Cancer Reporting Systems.

 

Leadership/Supervision      

  • Provide direction, assignments, feedback, coaching and counseling to assure outcomes are achieved.
  • Attend training workshops and provide guidance to other registrars in collecting data items for specific studies.
  • Attend training on CoC program standards and AJCC coding.
  • May help train new staff in data collection procedures and quality control.

Required Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in Medical Records or a human health science, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in medical records, epidemiology, or disease data collection.
  • Cancer Registry (3-5 years) experience, including experience in data collection, analysis, processing, coding, and reporting of cancer data and performance of critical review of the data.
  • Certification as a Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR).
  • PC computer software proficiency.
  • Provide a home-based office, including security and a network provider to facilitate the transmission of electronic data to the central office or to receive electronic information/data.
  • The ability to travel overnight, and a valid US driving license and the ability to meet the University of Iowa Fleet Safety Program driving standard. 

 

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience working with American College of Surgeons (ACoS) cancer program requirements.
  • A background in epidemiologic research and disease data collection methodology.
  • Evidence of good verbal and written communication skills.
