Position Summary :
Clinical Chaplains serve as an integral part of interdisciplinary team serving patients and families cared for within UI Health Care. They advocate for and with patients and families and staff according to values consistent with patients' belief systems.
Position Responsibilities
• Responds to all inpatient and outpatient consultations and screening requests. •
• Responds to the concurrent spiritual needs of patients’ families.
• Conducts spiritual assessments of patients and families.
• Develops spiritual care plans specific to the patient’s individual beliefs.
• Helps patient and/or family identify their personal and spiritual beliefs and resources.
• Advocates for the spiritual care of patient and/or family, and staff.
• Advocates for dignity, well-being, and quality of life as priorities in care and treatment of patients.
• Provides follow-up & support as requested by families.
• Assists family in the grieving process and provides resources.
• Administers sacraments and rites as appropriate.
• Provides a listening and supportive presence.
• Provides sacred and religious materials when requested.
• Assists with end-of-life healthcare planning such as Power of Attorney for Healthcare and Living Wills.
• Consults with community Clergy or spiritual leaders as desired by the patient and family.
• Demonstrates respect for all members of the University community while performing duties and in response to administrators, supervisors, coworkers, and customers.
• Participates in Daily rounds, team conferences, & family meetings as possible and upon request.
• Informs and educates team members about chaplaincy services and patient status and collaborates with team regarding service provision.
• Acts as a spiritual care resource for care teams.
• Assists team members including clinical and non-clinical staff in dealing with patient care and work-related spiritual challenges.
• Assists in the processing of ethical issues with patients, families, and medical/nursing staff.
• Promotes a welcoming and respectful workplace environment where people of all backgrounds and perspectives feel welcomed and appreciated, and where every individual is empowered to make a positive impact.
• Makes timely and concise clinical entries into patients' medical records covering the spiritual assessment and delivery of the spiritual care plan and visits with patients and families.
• Completes Departmental statistical reports.
• Demonstrates commitment to professional growth and development by pursuing opportunities for continuing education.
• Identifies problems/opportunities and assists in setting goals for service development.
• Involves other disciplines and implements plans.
• Evaluates outcome of service development.
• Represents the interests of the University and of Spiritual Services in the use of resources to meet service and productivity demands, division goals, and budgets; strives to promote continual process and quality improvement.
• Completes other projects or tasks within agreed-upon times.
• Devotes at least 75% to direct service (patient-related) activities.
• Other duties as assigned.
Education Requirements
- Master’s degree. Board certification is required within two years of hire through NACC, BCCI, SCA, or another recognized certifying body.
Experience Requirements
- Excellent oral and written communications skills; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and interpret ideas, information, and needs through appropriate communication methods and behaviors.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple concurrent objectives, projects, groups, or activities, making effective judgments as to prioritizing and time allocation. Demonstrates high attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
- Familiarity with electronic medical record (EMR).
- Experience in fast-paced, high-volume work environment.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with multi-disciplinary team.
Desired Qualifications
- Previous chaplaincy experience in an academic medical center setting desired.
- Previous experience with Epic electronic medical record desired.
