Laboratory Technician II, Quad Cities - Cancer Center
The Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Iowa is seeking a Lab Tech II that will perform difficult technical procedures and other associated responsibilities in the clinical laboratory; maintains laboratory area and equipment. Perform phlebotomy on patients of the UIHC Cancer Center Services, Quad Cities clinic.
Duties to include:
- Performs routine laboratory testing (urinalysis, blood tests, etc.) on clinical biological specimens such as blood and body fluids. Uses the Laboratory Information System to accession specimens. Performs, or may direct performance of, data entry, labeling and processing of laboratory specimens.
- Prepares specimens for transport to maintain specimen viability.
- Records results of laboratory testing and reports results in the Laboratory Information System and to clinicians in compliance with regulatory requirements and standard operating procedures.
- Operates, calibrates and maintains laboratory equipment and instruments.
- Performs phlebotomy.
- Performs records and reviews daily quality control as required for assigned testing/instrumentation.
- Cleans and maintains a medium-sized laboratory area and equipment therein, makes inventory reports and performs simple maintenance on laboratory equipment.
- Maintains supplies and equipment in medium sized laboratory area and orders additional supplies.
- Distributes incoming freight, laboratory supplies, environmental samples or biological specimens, and packs outgoing sample or specimen containers.
- Seeks assistance from the Laboratory Technical Consultant when complex equipment or technical issues arise. Informs the Laboratory Technical Consultant of significant laboratory variances.
- Responds to, or may direct response to, telephone inquiries regarding laboratory specimens. Investigates and resolves laboratory questions with minimum guidance.
- Assists in training of laboratory assistants. May perform functional supervision of laboratory assistants.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of care and use of laboratory equipment.
- Knowledge of principles of sanitation, health hazards, and the necessary precautionary measures.
- Knowledge of standard cleaning techniques and equipment and supplies required.
- Knowledge of keyboarding and computer data entry skills.
- Ability to use proper lifting and bending techniques.
- Ability to communicate effectively with others.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to collect data, keep accurate records, and prepare reports.
- Ability to count, add, subtract, multiply, divide and determine percentages.
- Ability to work with computerized inventory control systems.
- Ability to use and care for tools in maintenance and repair work.
- Ability to perform difficult lab procedures and prepare chemical solutions according to instructions.
- Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks.
- Ability to exercise functional supervision over employees.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
General supervision is received from a HCCC Assistant Nurse Manager.
Indirect supervision is received from the Pathology Laboratory Technical Consultant
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Functional and administrative supervision may be exercised over support staff.

Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, Hours generally worked between 7:00am-5pm

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Two years of related laboratory experience including one years as a Laboratory Technician I or equivalent level experience
- Certified Laboratory Assistant (CLA) certification
- Any combination of related post high school education and experience which totals two years
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
- Phlebotomy training/certification or previous phlebotomy experience
- Public contact/customer service
- Working knowledge of BEAKER and EPIC
- Working experience in a moderate complexity laboratory
- Knowledge of University of Iowa policies, procedures and regulations.
- Demonstrated verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Demonstrated attention to detail.
- Excellent organizational skills.
