Licensed Practical Nurse - UI Health Care Neurology & Sleep Clinic 70-100% (Multiple Openings)
The Heartland Drive Neurology (100%) and Sleep Clinic (70-100%) are seeking Licensed Practical Nurses. Under direct supervision of physician, physician assistant, nurse practitioner or registered nurse, performs technical, patient care and related clerical functions in an ambulatory setting. Duties may involve the use of electronic word/data processing equipment and/or conventional office equipment.
Neurology Clinic Job Responsibilities:
- Provides nursing care under the supervision of a registered professional nurse.
- Participates in the development of nursing care plans and in the implementation of therapeutic program for patients.
- In less complex situations, may assume responsibility for directing and supervising assigned nursing personnel. In more complex situations, performs as an assistant to the registered professional nurse.
- Current valid driver’s license and the ability to meet the University Driving Policy Standards
Sleep Clinic Job Responsibilities:
- Performs physical assessment and assists with physical examination of patients, including patient history, medication records, allergies, immunizations, vital signs, weight, height, and current health history; documents or reviews all pertinent patient data.
- Administers medications, including routine oral, rectal, and injectable medications; gives injections, monitors treatments and patient responses, and documents reactions to medications and treatments.
- Assists in examinations of patients, diagnostic procedures, minor surgeries, and related treatments.
- Performs various screening and routine laboratory tests in preparation for or as part of patient examinations, including urinalysis, blood work, electrocardiograms, and x-ray work as needed.
- Manages, maintains, and coordinates internal and external medical records to ensure accurate and complete patient information is available for appointments, and assures appropriate transfer of medical records as directed or requested.
- Provides patient education regarding diagnosis, medications, treatments, and follow-up care under the supervision of the physician or according to clinic protocols.
- Performs various screening tests in preparation for patient’s physical examination.
- Assesses visual acuity, oxygen saturation, and blood glucose levels.
- Provides patient education regarding diagnosis, medication, and treatment under direct or indirect supervision of the physician, or as directed by clinic protocol.
- Applies dressings, assesses and documents wound condition, removes sutures, assures proper fit of orthopedic equipment, and provides treatments according to standardized protocols. Responsible for teaching patients follow-up care.
- Initiates basic cardiac life support and assists in emergency situations as needed.
- Maintains appropriate inventory of medical equipment and patient education materials in patient examination areas.
- Maintains responsibility for screening and directing communication between clinic staff, consulting staff, continuing care providers, students, university faculty and staff, and the public.
- Responsible for evaluating and documenting function of emergency equipment and for maintaining stock medication supplies.
- May exercise functional supervision over students or health aids.
- Responsible for facilitating the smooth flow of patients through the clinic through interaction with patients, families and staff.
- Performs routine laboratory tests such as urinalysis and blood work, does electrocardiograms and x-ray work as needed.
- Identifies vaccination needs for specific patient populations.
- Performs related clerical tasks including answering phones, scheduling appointments and providing information other departments.
- Assists in obtaining insurance prior authorizations.

Neurology Clinic:
Percent of Time: 100% (40 hours per week)
Schedule: Monday – Friday variable from 7:30 AM – 5:00 PM. No weekends, on call time, or holidays required.
Location: Coralville, IA (or surround clinics based on clinical need or hours)
Pay Grade: 11
Sleep Clinic:
Percent of Time: 70-100%
Schedule: 28-40 hours/week will be accomplished from Monday – Friday 7:30AM - 5:00PM, with a one-hour lunch. No evenings or weekends
Location: Coralville, IA (and surrounding clinics based on clinical need/hours)
Pay Grade: 11

Minimum Eligibility Requirements
- Licensed as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) with the Iowa Board of Nursing, or eligible for temporary work permit. Responsible to take the required continuing education hours to maintain a valid LPN certification
- Basic Cardiac Life Support provider
Special Qualification/License:
- Driver’s License and ability to meet UI Fleet Safety Standards
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
Highly Desirable Qualifications
- The ability to adapt quickly to different clinical environments and patient populations is highly desired.
- One year of experience as a Licensed Practical nurse
- Previous work utilizing customer service skills
Desirable Qualifications
- Knowledge of medical terminology
- Previous Epic experience
- Previous Neurology clinic experience
- Demonstrated experience fostering a welcoming and respectful work/academic environment.
Sleep Clinic
Required Qualifications:
- Licensed as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) with the Iowa Board of Nursing, or eligible for temporary work permit. Responsible to take the required continuing education hours to maintain a valid LPN certification.
- Basic Cardiac Life Support provider.
Special Qualification/License:
- Driver's License and ability to meet UI Fleet Safety Standards.
- Demonstrated excellent written/verbal communication.
Highly Desired Requirements
- High technological experience
- Experience as liaison for healthcare teams
- Previous experience providing patients with standardized, pre-printed instructions
- Experience with durable medical equipment
Desired Requirements
- Minimum one year experience as a Licensed Practical Nurse/LPN preferred.
- Previous experience in Sleep clinic
- EPIC experience
- Knowledge of medical terminology
