The Department of Rehabilitation Therapies at the University of Iowa Health Medical Center is seeking a staff Educator to plan and implement academic and therapeutic instruction and document student progress. This position entails working on an inpatient psychiatric unit with children and adolescent patients with a mental health diagnosis.

  • Provide quality patient care as a certified teacher including standardized assessment, lesson preparation, individual and small group academic instruction, and therapeutic instruction
  • Record data on the status and progress of patients every day they participate in educational activities and on transactions with their community schools, parents, and professionals

Location: University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center (200 Hawkins Dr)

Type of Position: Regular full-time position during academic school year. Employee is placed on leave of absence for the summer; however, some hours are required during the summer to cover staffing needs.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 1–3 years of teaching experience
  • Experience working with students exhibiting challenging behaviors
  • Experience implementing and teaching social-emotional (SEL) curriculum
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Special Education Certification or Endorsement in one or more of these areas: Behavior Disorders, Learning Disabilities, Early Childhood Special Education, or Intellectual Disabilities

 

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Valid Iowa Teaching Certificate

 

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Master’ s degree in Education or related field
  • Instructional Strategist II ID and BD/LD Endorsements
  • Teaching experience in special education, particularly in a self-contained classroom
  •  Demonstrated success working with students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other developmental disabilities
  • Experience implementing TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic and Communication-Handicapped Children) or similar teaching approaches
  • Proficiency in managing challenging behaviors using evidenced based strategies and behavior intervention plans
  • Demonstrated skill in the development of curriculum aligned to students’ IEP goals, ensuring success to meaningful and individualized instruction.
  • Strong working knowledge of ACHIEVE Iowa for IEP development and compliance.
  • Ability to independently plan, facilitate, and lead IEP meetings, ensuring family centered collaboration and alignment with IDEA requirements.
  • Skilled in collaborating with local school districts to gather academic and behavioral data and provide clear, supportive transition recommendations for returning students.
