Under direct supervision of physician, physician assistant, nurse practitioner or registered nurse, performs technical, patient care and related clerical functions in support of the Clinical Trials Support Core in the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Clinical Cancer Center by administering routine tests and coordinating patient intake and clinic flow.
Duties Include:
  • Performs routine tests such as vital signs, urinalysis, preparing and processing blood work, electrocardiograms.
  •  Responsible for facilitating the smooth flow of patients through the clinic through interaction with patients, families and staff.
  • Coordinate patient visits as designed per protocol.
  • Enters protocol patient data on electronic databases ensuring accuracy and alignment with source data.
  • Process and ship diagnostic specimens.
  • Assist in clinic with physical examination of patient and related treatments, including but not limited to: patient history, medication records, allergies and immunizations.
  • Manages internal and external medical records to ensure that accurate and complete data is available for patient appointments.
  • Administers routine oral, rectal or injectable medications not requiring a high level of skill or nursing judgment.  (These are medications that can only be administered by certified medical assistants or medical assistants who have completed a formal accredited training program.)
  • Supports clerical staff including answering phones, scheduling appointments, intake and release of participants, and providing information to other departments.
  • Utilizes EPIC to ensure that accurate and complete data is available for participant appointments.
  • Review medical record requests through EPIC, contacting external departments and physician offices, as appropriate to obtain records assuring deadlines are met.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center coordinates all cancer-related research, education, and patient care by faculty from 41 departments and six colleges, as well as UI Hospitals and Clinics and UI Children’s Hospital.


Percent of Time: 100%

Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM; ½ hour lunch 

Location: Cancer Center (John Pappajohn Pavilion)

Minimum Eligibility Requirements

Certification or registration as a Medical Assistant or completion of a recognized one year Medical Assistant Program, OR

Completion of a health care profession program with a curriculum incorporating elements of a Medical Assistant program including but not limited to: pathophysiology, medical terminology, basic pharmacology and medication administration including dose calculation and psychology.

Desirable Qualifications
  • ABHES or CAAHEP Accreditation
  • Medical terminology.
  • Public Contact/Customer Service
  • Demonstrated Verbal, Written and Interpersonal Communication Skills.
  • Demonstrated Attention to Detail.
  • Excellent Organizational Skills
  • Knowledge of University of Iowa policies, procedures and regulations.
