Medical Lab Scientist - Mission Cancer & Blood (Des Moines) *Sign On Incentive*
Mission Cancer + Blood, part of UI Health Care is seeking a MLS to provide leadership in the laboratory while completing the day to day activities of the lab including venipuncture, VAD (port) access, PICC line and finger stick blood collection procedures to obtain specimens from patients for laboratory testing used in the diagnosis and treatment of disease; resource for the processing of these specimens and the performing of moderate complexity and point of care testing in an accurate and timely manner; maintaining proper documentation and accurate recording of results; assures testing is done in accordance within established policies and procedures and following CLIA requirements and regulations. Perform additional projects and tasks assigned by the Lab Manager including, but not limited to, safety, proficiency testing, record keeping, training, and lab relations as it pertains to patients, providers, and other employees.
Duties to include:
- Assure reports include pertinent information for interpretation and are reviewed and updated annually (reference ranges, critical ranges and units). Notify Lab Manager of any changes needed
- Assure that strict procedures and the practice of safety precautions are followed to prevent the transmission of infectious diseases
- Coordinate STAT testing and arrange a designated person to courier if needed
- Ensure lab is appropriately stocked with all supplies including those that come from reference laboratories (MCL/Path Lab)
- Foster unity and teamwork within the lab team
- Adhere to strict procedures and practice of safety precautions to prevent the transmission of infectious diseases
- Explain procedures to patients and family members in a professional and courteous manner
- Utilize standard procedures to determine positive patient identification
- Verify, complete, and resolve orders in the EMR (electronic medical record)
- Complete lab requisition orders and produce appropriate labels for specimen tubes in the LIS (laboratory information system)
- Obtain blood specimens from patients as required using established blood-drawing techniques
- Centrifuge appropriate tubes to obtain serum/plasma for testing
- Perform moderate complexity or point of care testing following standard operating policies and procedures
- Assist with collection, labeling, and transportation of other laboratory specimens as necessary
- Record results in accordance with established policies, procedures and regulations
- Perform various quality control procedures to maintain compliance with internal and external regulations
- Maintain inventory of supplies, materials and equipment
- Maintain and clean equipment and instruments as per established procedures and manufacturer’s instructions
- Perform calibrations and proficiency testing and calibration verification as required
- Maintain records and documentation for proficiency testing and to meet CLIA requirements and regulations
- Assist in bone marrow biopsy collections
- Perform all other duties as assigned

Percent of Time: 100%
Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 40 hours/ week, Hours generally worked between 7:00am-5:30pm

Sign On Incentive: $5,000 with 2+ years experience. Must be hired as regular, non-temporary employee in PT28 classification. Must not have been employed by UI Health Care in a similar position within 12 months. Commitment to two years of employment in the position. Repayment is prorated in the amount of the sign-on payment if individual leaves before end of two-year commitment.

QUALIFICATIONS
- A Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, biological, clinical laboratory science, or medical technology program from an accredited institution.
- Some (6 months – 1 year) clinical laboratory experience, which may include program training experience, is required.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
**Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or a categorical/specialist certification in the appropriate laboratory discipline from American Society for Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) from Health Education and Welfare (HEW) is required.
**MLS certification was formally known and equivalent to Medical Technologist accredited from American Society for Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or National Credentialing Agency (NCA).
