Neurology - Research Assistant in Neurogenetics
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Research: Perform research activities based on clinical evaluations of patients with inherited peripheral neuropathies. These activities will be based on protocols developed by the research team in the Inherited Neuropathy Clinic at the University of Iowa as well as by our collaborating institutions in the Inherited Neuropathy Consortium. The Research Assistant will be expected to read and review relevant articles concerning the inherited peripheral neuropathies collectively referred to as Charcot Marie Tooth disease (CMT). As the RA’s skills develop he or she will be expected to analyze relevant literature to develop hypothesis for discussion with other researchers on the team or principal investigator.
Conduct Experiments: The RA will be expected to read and understand the various protocols that constitute the Inherited Neuropathy Clinic (INC) Rare Disease Clinical Research Consortium (RDCRC) and the North American CMT Network. The RA will actively participate in several of these protocols. He are she will also actively participate in data entry and data analysis based on the protocols. The RA will be expected to present results at lab meetings as his or her skills progress.
Analyze and Summarize Data: Prepare reports; contribute to manuscripts, assist with research projects being performed by other clinical team members.
Publications: Collect, track, and perform data entry for reports. Prepare materials for reports. As skills develop, analyze data. Prepare bibliographies and abstracts for publication. May attend meetings based on abstracts and publications.
Administrative and Project Management: Perform a variety of routine tasks related to the recruitment, enrollment and monitoring of research subjects or to the research environment of the Inherited Neuropathy Clinic. Obtain subject consent and assist with IRB submissions or equivalent protocol. Adhere to safety and compliance guidelines.
Facilities and Equipment Management: Assist in the preparation, calibration, and maintenance of equipment used in the clinic. Assist with procurement of supplies and materials. May initiate purchasing requests, monitor accounts/expenditures; reconcile statements.
Supervision/Staffing: May train, provide direction, assignments, feedback, coaching and counseling of employees to assure outcomes are achieved.
Education Requirement

Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience. |

Previous research experience. |

Excellent organizational skills and must be reliable and efficient with time management. |

Excellent interpersonal skills including an ability to communicate (written and verbally) effectively with collaborators, the clinical care team, and to assist with project researchers. |

Desirable Qualification
|
An interest in medicine and more specifically, neurogenetic conditions. |

Previous experience with direct patient care and patient research. |
Successful candidates will be subject to a criminal background check.
