This position is housed in the Stead Family Department of Pediatrics in the Division of Medical Genetics and Genomics. This staff member will perform case management and follow up duties for the Iowa Newborn Screening Program (INSP) and affiliated state newborn screening programs. Duties include clinical, educational, administrative, liaison and research activities as well as data entry and tracking.

This job is 100% remote (in Iowa) but does require some travel for intermittent in-person meetings and activities.

Position Responsibilities: 

·       Perform case management activities for Iowa and other state newborn screening programs which include: telephone, fax, or email notification to primary care providers, birthing facilities, specialists, health care workers, and/or parents for abnormal newborn screening results; communicate recommendations in accord with established protocols; assist primary care providers, facilities, and parents/guardians in obtaining a repeat screen and/or confirmatory testing; inform medical consultants of the results of the confirmatory testing to assess next steps; assist with the referral process to specialists; work with the program’s medical consultants to ascertain an outcome for cases.

·       Document information and outcomes in multiple databases. Perform data entry into databases (state, national, and potentially disorder-specific). Gather, collate and review data, as assigned. Work with program staff to interpret data and make decisions in accord with established protocols.

·       Attend and participate in meetings, as assigned. These meetings could include staff meetings, case closure meetings, disorder specific meetings, state newborn screening advisory committee meetings, etc. Meetings could also include attendance at state, regional, national meetings or meetings related to grants obtained by the program. Travel is required.

·       Participate in the development and review of protocols and other documents.

·       Assist with the development and implementation of educational programs for newborn screening stakeholders.

·       Provide education on newborn screening to stakeholders. Education will require travel to provide face-to-face education when necessary (within Iowa or states with which the newborn screening program contracts for services).

·       Participate in quality improvement projects, as assigned.

·       Assist Program Manager with development and implementation of screening for new disorders added to the newborn screening program, as assigned.

·       Assist with and/or prepare and present newborn screening related clinical and research projects such as abstracts, posters, journal articles, or presentations.

·       Maintain skills and competencies related to case management and short-term follow up duties.

·       Communicate expectations and provide support and resources that are in alignment with the vision and trategic planning of the University to foster creativity and innovation in the workplace.

·       Provide weekend call on weekends and holidays, as assigned. (e.g. approximately 1 in 5 depending on staffing)

·       Assist Program Manager with administrative tasks including using MS Word, Excel, etc.

·       Maintain patient rights and confidentiality and serve as a patient advocate.

·       Perform other duties as assigned by Program Manager or Medical Director (special projects or assignments).

About the Division of Medical Genetics and Genomics

The Division of Medical Genetics and Genomics is committed to excellence in providing comprehensive services for children, adults, and prenatal patients in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of genetic conditions. The Division's multidisciplinary team is comprised of board-certified medical geneticists, clinical biochemical geneticists, molecular genetic pathologists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, genetic counselors, nurses, and dietitians.  Our medical genetics team collaborates with state and federal agencies, educators, researchers, support groups, and others to provide the latest information and treatment options for patients and their families.

Education:

Required:

·       RN, relevant bachelor’s and/or master’s degree (genetics, public health), or equivalent experience

 

Required Qualifications:

·       Ability to obtain and maintain appropriate licensure (for example: nursing, genetic counseling) in Iowa and all other relevant states, as indicated

·       Minimum of one year of relevant experience (such as nursing, public health, maternal or newborn medical care, medical case management)

·       Excellent oral and written communication skills, including relaying complicated medical information in a clear, concise, and definitive manner to health care professionals

·       Ability to travel to same day and/or to multiple day meetings

·       Previous experience and ability to work in a fast-paced and time-critical environment

·       Previous experience and ability to work independently as well as within a team

·       Demonstrated critical thinking and assessment skills

·       Demonstrated high attention to detail including strong organizational skills.

·       Proficiency with Microsoft Office (i.e. Word and Excel)

      Valid Driver’s License and ability to meet UI Fleet Safety Standards

 

Highly Desired Qualifications:

·       Direct experience in newborn screening

·       Pediatric or obstetrics nursing experience

·       Experience in providing patient or health related education with emphasis on knowledge of adult learning theory to small and large groups of people

·       Proficiency with databasing and statistics

·       Demonstrated project management skills; including developing, planning and implementing initiatives

·       Demonstrated experience with quality improvement projects and/or management

·       BSN

·       Master’s degree in Nursing

·       RN with certification or focus in public health

·       RN with certification or focus in genetics

·       Relevant Master’s (Master’s of Public Health, Master’s of Science in Genetic Counseling)
