NICU Family Support Specialist/Liaison

Qualifications

Education Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field (social work, nursing, education, public health) or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Qualifications

• Experience as a parent or primary care giver managing the care of an infant or child at home following hospitalization in a NICU
• Demonstrated related experience, including knowledge of and/or understanding of the issues/experiences faced by patients and families in the NICU (emotional, medical, etc.)
• Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to the philosophy and principles of patient- and family-centered care
• Experience working with community partners and resources for children discharged from a NICU or with special health care needs. 
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including capacity to demonstrate positive interpersonal skills and work as a cooperative team member.
• Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgement in handling sensitive and confidential information and situations
• Demonstrated job-related experience with and/or commitment to diversity in the work/academic environment
• Proficiency in computer software applications, including demonstrated experience in using email and using the Internet for locating resources.

Desired Qualifications

• Experience as a parent in the NICU at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital
• Experience serving in an advocacy role for families with an infant in the NICU and/or a special health care need.
• Previous experience that demonstrates leadership skills.
• Work experience in a hospital or other medical setting.
• Experience in program/project development and coordination.
• Demonstrated ability to speak, read, and/or write in different languages, including Spanish.
