The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics department of Ambulatory Surgery Center is seeking a Nursing Assistant to assist the members of the nursing team in provision of multiple types of patient care in in-patient and outpatient care areas.  Their work requires familiarity with a wide variety of nursing procedures used in delivering patient care.  Recent direct Operating Room (OR) patient care experience is preferred. 100% rotating schedule, 8 hour shifts, between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.  Hours may be adjusted based on departmental needs.

 Duties to include:

  • Assists with patient admission, transfers and discharges
  • Provides for patients’ personal hygiene and comfort.
  • Assist with patient ambulation.
  • Transports patients, equipment, specimens and supplies.
  • Provides nourishments to patients.
  • Assist patients to restrooms.
  • Takes and records temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure.
  • Carries out medical asepsis and cares for isolated patients.
  • Performs simple diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as collecting specimens etc.
  • Participates in reporting pertinent patient information and incidents to nurse in charge.
  • Provides for patient comfort measures through social interactions.
  • Shares responsibility for preparation, proper use and care of equipment and supplies and for neatness and cleanliness of unit.
  • May assemble equipment and supplies in preparation for various diagnostic or treatment procedures performed by physicians or nurse.
  • Performs special duties as taught and directed by the nurse in charge.
  • Cleans patient units, operating rooms and examining rooms dependent on the area of assignment.
  • Stock and supply patient rooms and nursing units.

Schedule:  8 hour shifts - rotating schedule between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday

Location: Ambulatory Surgery Center – 4th floor Pomerantz Family Pavilion (PFP)

Rotations: Rotating schedule between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Hours may be adjusted based on departmental needs

  • Ability to read, write and follow instruction

Desirable Qualifications

  • Recent direct Operating Room (OR) patient care experience or recent direct patient care experience highly preferred.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others.
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Ability to provide care with regard to patient condition and age.
  • Knowledge of principles of sanitation and health hazards.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships.
