The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Department of Emergency Medicine is seeking a full-time (100%) Nurse Manager for our Neo-Peds Transport team.  

This position will provide managerial and clinical leadership to the Neonatal and Pediatric Transport team and assure all staff provide safe clinical care with the education, methods and resources to accomplish their performance objectives. Positions in this job family usually have limited involvement in direct patient care and focus their efforts in planning, organizing, directing, evaluating, and improving health care operations, clinical education programs and research programs of clinical and health service departments. 
 
Primary responsibilities include:
 
Human Resource Management:
• Assure performance expectations are clearly understood. Hold staff accountable to meet or exceed patient needs/expectations as well as maintain standards of collaboration and respect within and among multidisciplinary teams.
• Complete staff evaluations (30-60-90 day, annual, etc.) by required deadlines with written, solid justification provided via thorough example(s).
• Manage the talents, strengths and behaviors of each individual in a diverse work group while providing each employee with the opportunity to contribute to the unit goals.
• In collaboration with the Emergency Medicine HR (EMS HR), make effective and timely recommendations in matters of hiring, promotion, transfer, and disciplinary action(s) based on University/Health Care supported Human Resource (HR) policies and practice. 
• Develop, and manage performance of nursing and respiratory therapy staff in transport role. 
• Follow and implement HR policies/procedures and provisions in the collective bargaining agreements. 
• Actively seeks participation from staff on decision-making and patient care improvement activities; provides staff incentive and rewards for contributions toward achievement of service excellence.
• Demonstrate commitment to people; coach staff to participate in team decision-making.
• In collaboration with the EMS HR, develop and implement succession planning.
• Review attendance data, recognize trends and take appropriate follow-up with staff as determined by established EMS practice, and in consult with the EMS HR.
• Adhere to all University/Health Care guidelines and established labor management agreements.  Create an atmosphere which provides for effective recruitment and retention of qualified staff.
• Build and sustain positive and collaborative working relationships internally and externally.
• Resolve conflict confidentially and within a timely manner while ensuring EMS HR is notified and consulted appropriately.
• Work with contracted partner to manage ambulance drivers.
 
Financial Management: 
• Monitor unit budget and other financial reports; analyze variances and take corrective action for expense and/or volume fluctuations as appropriate, and in collaboration with EMS leadership. 
• Develop a staffing plan and monitor staffing costs; manage inventory levels; track supply usage; and develop cost-containment strategies.
• Motivate staff to high performance by exercising strong stewardship of University and Health Care resources.
• Open to creativity in staff scheduling and staff flexibility.  Assure that fiscal goals are clearly understood by staff and that objectives are met.
• Participate in the development of the unit operating budget, review staffing plans, develop a plan for minor equipment and furniture replacement; review service contracts; and plans for new supply costs, etc.
• Forecast expense and capital needs; participate in unit budget development; and plan ahead for capital equipment replacement
• Prepare budget or assist in development; provide projections and recommendations including implications of collective bargaining agreements. 
• Monitor and maintain operating budget within specified targets. 
• Analyze variances and create action plans to take corrective action. 
• Assist in contract negotiations and requirements for ambulance driver coverage. 
 
Operations, Standards of Care, Regulatory Compliance, Quality and Patient Satisfaction: 
• Use expert knowledge and skill of compliance standards. 
• Lead development and implementation of procedures and quality improvement. 
• Provide leadership to establish and/or maintain efficient and effective systems to ensure optimal patient outcomes. 
• Identify trends and determine quality initiatives and priorities. 
• Allocate resources to meet quality and productivity expectations. 
• Review patient satisfaction data and develop, implement and evaluate plan(s) to enhance patient satisfaction. 
• Ensure unit/clinic is survey ready. 
• Know and understand the regulatory compliances needed to maintain the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems (CAMTS) accreditation. 
 
Patient Care Services/ Services Delivery: 
• Assess care coordination within multidisciplinary team to maximize patient satisfaction and continuity of care. Identify needs, trends, and forecasts in order to provide quality patient care and ensure appropriate flex staffing.
 
Communication & Collaboration:
• Advocate for needs of unit/clinic with healthcare leaders. 
• Facilitate multidisciplinary participation in clinical problem solving. 
• Utilize unit councils to identify opportunities for improvement and innovative models of care using a multidisciplinary team to impact patient outcomes.
 
Education Programs and Research Administration: 
• Educate and mentor staff in the management of complex patient care issues. Provide clinical education and coaching to develop staff competency and professionalism. Provide expert specialty-level education to healthcare staff, patients, students or residents. Communicate detailed, complex medical and technical information to a variety of audiences. 
• Encourage staff to participate in evidence-based practice research initiatives and incorporate best practices into operations. 
 
Percent of Time: 100%
Schedule: Monday- Friday, day hours.  Ability to provide evening/weekend coverage as neccessary.  Willingness to travel for training and education.

Education Requirements:
 
• Master’s degree in Nursing or related field. If Master’s degree is in a related field, a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing is required. 
• Must obtain an advanced degree in nursing, health care administration, or business administration within five (5) years of beginning this position.  
 
Experience Requirements:
 
Minimum 3-5 years of experience and success within a neonatal and/or pediatric nursing leader/manager position. Includes clinical nursing operations, performance management, regulatory oversight, and budget/finances. Outpatient/ambulatory setting preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to lead and manage within a multi-disciplinary team.
• Previous experience providing direct nursing care in neonatal/pediatric transport. 
• Demonstrated ability to establish and build professional relationships while collaborating effectively and positively with physicians, staff, patients/families, and other internal and external customers.
• Excellent interpersonal skills with patients/families, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary team members as demonstrated through written and verbal interactions.
• Proven job-related experience with and/or commitment to diversity in the work/academic environment.
• Ability to provide evening/weekend coverage as necessary.
• Ability to travel for training and education.
 
Certification/Licensure Requirements:
 
• Current license to practice nursing in Iowa or ability to obtain an Iowa license upon hire.
• Current BLS required by start date.
• NRP and PALS certification or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
• Certification in a role or specialty through a nationally recognized professional certification body. If not currently certified, must seek certification in a role or specialty as soon as eligible to sit for the exam. 
 
Desired Qualifications:
 
• 5 years of experience and success within a neonatal and/or pediatric nursing leader/manager position. Includes clinical nursing operations, performance management, regulatory oversight, and budget/finances. Outpatient/ambulatory setting preferred.
• Prior experience within an academic medical setting.
• Some knowledge of University policies and procedures.
• Experience with scheduling and payroll processing in ELMS or other payroll systems.
