The Department of Nursing Services and Patient Care presents an opportunity for an experienced nurse leader to advance their career.  We are seeking a full time Nursing Practice Leader (NPL).  This Nursing Practice Leader (NPL) interfaces with administrators, nursing staff, and multidisciplinary teams to provide expertise related to clinical practice, education, quality, and safety on the ISS units.
 
Key areas of responsibility include:
 
Provide Leadership and Direct Care for Specialized Patient Population
  • Collaborates with nursing, medical staff and other health professionals in the development and review of policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Ensures that all ISS policies, procedures and guidelines are evidence-based and are reviewed/revised on a regular basis and compliant with national standards.
  • Provides leadership in implementing strategies to influence quality and safety initiatives.Serves as an expert resource on ISS clinical practice and quality initiatives.
  • Serves on multiple Department of Nursing Shared Governance Committees and assumes chair or co-chair responsibilities as needed.

Specialized Services for Nursing Care

  • Serves as a member of the Nursing Research/Evidence Based Practice Committee and as the ISS liaison to the Change Champions program.  
  • Reviews national standards regarding clinical care and uses relevant nursing literature to improve clinical practice. Helps to investigate nursing care challenges/issues on the ISS units.

Provide Education

  • Coordinates and teaches orientation classes for new RNs and nursing assistant coming to the ISS units.
  • Coordinates and assists in the development and execution of annual competency sessions for the ISS nursing staff.
  • Provides additional in-service training as requested on the ISS units.
  • Demonstrates broad knowledge of clinical care and quality initiatives on the ISS units.
  • Mentors ISS nursing staff and supports nursing leaders in their positions.
  • Act as facilitator for nurse residency/experienced nurse residency groups as requested.
  • Provides opportunities for interprofessional development and networking by coordinating local and regional live and virtual conferences. 

Compliance with Internal Policies and External Regulations for Safe and Effective Care Delivery and Health Profession Education

  • Serves on the Department of Nursing and hospital Accreditation Committees.
  • Ensures staff education and education files meet regulatory requirements for multiple disease specific regulatory visits.
  • Participates in quarterly line surveys to assess compliance with CLABSI and CAUTI initiatives.
  • Reviews patient falls incident reports for accuracy and level of injury. Follows up with pertinent staff members/nursing leaders and assures accurate documentation of events. Serves on the Department of Nursing Falls Committee.

Education Required
  • Master's Degree in Nursing or related field.
  • If Master's Degree is in a related field, Baccalaureate in Nursing is required.
  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa
  • Current professional certification in specialty nursing area required at time of application to be considered a viable candidate.
Experience Requirements
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in Intensive Care Nursing
  • Demonstrated experience in using an incident reporting system
  • Previous experience preparing and presenting education programs such as orienatation or in-service training.
  • Previous experience with Joint Commission preparedness and compliance
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Must be proficient in computer software applications

Desired Qualifications​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

  • ​​​​​​​Previous experience with Joint Commission preparedness and compliance.
  • Experience conducting audits, analyzing data, and presenting results​​​​​​​
  • Experience with reviewing nursing research and implementing evidence based practice. 
  • Experience with developing/running clinical simulations
  • Trained as a Basic Life Support instructor
  • Doctor of Nursing Practice
