University of Iowa Health Care, department of Safety and Security is seeking an Occupational Safety Specialist to assist the Safety Manager to ensure hospital compliance with state and federal guidelines, conduct job hazard assessments and safety reviews, and provide safety expertise and training to staff.

Position Responsibilities

Workplace Assessments, Surveys and Inspections

  • Support activities of the Occupational Safety Manager
  • Conduct inspections/audits in accordance with regulatory and accrediting agencies
  • Conduct job hazard assessments and safety reviews
  • Advise on corrective actions for institutional compliance
  • Communicate significant issues to appropriate authorities

Regulatory Compliance

  • Provide support for safety programs to ensure compliance
  • Evaluate efficacy of our occupational safety programs ( i.e. Respirator, Hearing Conservation programs)
  • Assist with maintaining UI Health Care’s Hazard Communication program and chemical inventories
  • Assist with hazardous waste program
  • Assist with Lockout/Tagout program
  • Assist with Confined Space program
  • Assist with hazardous spill plan preparedness and response
  • Maintain policies/ procedures for the UI Health Care safety program
  • Monitor State and Federal regulations and communicate updates to the Safety Manager
  • Participate in regulatory surveys and visits

Exposure Monitoring

  • Assist with successful implementation of the UI Health Care exposure program
  • Communicate exposure reports to appropriate departments and or regulatory agencies
  • Maintain exposure monitoring documentation

Equipment Operations and Maintenance

  • Assist in evaluation and acquisition of new equipment
  • Assist with process to verify ongoing equipment functionality
  • Ensure equipment calibration and documentation is current
  • Utilize monitoring equipment and analyzing monitoring data

Safety Training

  • Assist with developing safety training material
  • Provide Safety training to departments (including the offsite clinics)
  • Participate in safety committees as assigned by the Safety Manager

Education Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, Physical Science, Safety Management, Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Safety, Industrial Hygiene or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required

Required Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office computer software applications (i.e. Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc)
  • Experience with public speaking and communication

Desired Qualifications

·       Knowledge of State and Federal safety regulations

·       1 – 3 years’ experience with occupational or environmental health and safety issues

·       Experience with hazardous material handling, storage and disposal

·       Knowledge of and experience with hazardous waste handling and disposal

·       Experience providing safety training, education, and advising on compliance

·       Experience writing and maintaining policies and procedures
