The UI Stead Family Department of Pediatrics, Division of Cardiology is seeking a Hospitalist to function as an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) in Pediatric Cardiology, incorporating the primary role of inpatient cardiology APP, and the supporting roles of consultant and educator, to support quality care and promote positive patient outcomes.  By serving as inpatient care coordinator for the pediatric cardiology population, this APP will provide comprehensive care focused on optimizing outcomes and quality of life for those patients cared for by the pediatric cardiology team.

 

Duties to include:

  •          Obtains in-depth and complete medical histories from the patient and family.
  •          Performs examinations according to accepted medical practice both in inpatient and outpatient areas.
  •          Exhibits current and comprehensive knowledge of pediatric cardiology in determining cardiac problems and communicates treatment programs relating to the patient’s needs. 
  •          Completes all medical documentation and billing procedures according to institutional and departmental guidelines.
  •          Determines required tests according to accepted practice so that no unnecessary tests are performed.
  •          Interprets tests according to accepted medical standards such that appropriate care is given.
  •          Completes prior authorizations for required medications as directed by insurance in a timely manner.
  •          Makes recommendations for follow-up according to accepted practice.
  •          Determines and facilitates referral and consultation needs in a timely manner.
  •          Serves as inpatient care coordinator for the pediatric cardiology patient population.
  •          Maintains communication with parents, local providers, and other health services such as VNA or school nurses to assure that complete information is relayed to appropriate parties. 
  •          Educates patients and families.  This includes the development and updating of patient education materials, and brochures. 
  •          Actively participates in daily inpatient rounds.
  •          Prepares patients and families for discharge and follow-up.
  •          Assists with development and implementation of standards of care and guidelines as part of quality improvement.
  •          Performs Pediatric Cardiology consults as requested.

Education/Leadership

  •          Provides ongoing health education for patients and their families, utilizing all available media.
  •          Participates in the instruction and orientation of new trainees at UIHC and the College of Nursing.
  •          Serves as a resource to pediatric cardiology nursing personnel.  Provides constructive feedback and support to assist them to improve their performance. 
  •          Contributes to professional sharing of expertise and nursing knowledge with others by participating in regional and national meetings and presenting as invited.
  •          Participates in professional nursing activities in the department, hospital, community, and professional organizations.
  •          Participates in annual competency review per hospital standards.
  •          Attends learning sessions and participates in planning and presenting information.

About the Division of Cardiology: 

The Division of Cardiology at the University of Iowa Stead Family Department of Pediatrics provides compassionate, family-centered, and state-of-the-art delivery of care to children and young adults with congenital and acquired heart disease. Patients are followed through the transition to adulthood. Dedicated staff have expertise in acquired heart diseases such as cardiomyopathies, cardiac arrhythmias, congenital heart disease, cardiac dysfunction in malignancy, and cardiac implications associated with pediatric obesity. The division provides the only expertise for electrophysiology, diagnostic, advanced imaging, interventional and transplant services for children and youth in the state of Iowa. Skilled surgical support and exceptional critical care postoperative support has outcomes that have excellent results in national databases. The division has a multi-purpose diagnostic and interventional procedure lab which is constantly expanding and including state-of-the-art technologies.

 

 

Education Required

Physician Assistant (PA)

  •          Must comply with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the Iowa Board of Physician Assistant Examiners which include graduation from an accredited PA educational program and/or certification by the NCCPA.
  •        Eligible to be licensed by the State of Iowa to perform as a Physician Assistant Certification by the NCCPA

Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP)

  •        A Master’s degree is required.  A Master’s degree in Nursing is preferred.  If Master’s degree is in a related field, a Baccalaureate degree in nursing is required. 
  •        Current board certification in specialty area and licensure as an ARNP in the State of Iowa.

Required Qualifications

  •        Minimum of 3 years clinical experience working with pediatric cardiology patients, congenital heart disease, critical care, medical management of CHD, or post-op management of pediatric heart patients. 
  •        Experience in interdisciplinary leadership through strategic collaboration and coordination of clinical services.
  •        Evidence of strong leadership skills, including ability to work independently with indirect supervision, demonstrated critical thinking/problem solving skills, and demonstrated training/mentoring skills.
  • Demonstrated experience with patient and staff education.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills are required. 
  • BLS certification
  • Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.

Desired Qualifications

  •          Demonstrated experience providing overall medical care and medical management for patients in an inpatient setting.
  •          Demonstrated experience exercising autonomy in medical decision-making and services provided.
  •          Demonstrated experience managing length of stay, improving resource utilization and decrease costs to patients and the institution while providing personalized care.
  •          Participation in professional nursing or physician assistant organizations.
  •          Demonstrated experience with evidence-based practice or research utilization.
